1140 Baler In Need Of Help - Owner, Too!

This is my first post on this site. Please bear with me! I've just purchased an A.C. 1140 baler with a 44 thrower. As it sits, stranded, on my front lawn, I can't help but to think it's the right time of year to have something orange in front of the house. It was dropped off (literally speaking) this afternoon. The efforts to slide it off the back of the truck (using the winch to keep it from running amuck in my front yard) proved useless once the hitch hung up in a stake pocket & cocked the baler sideways. I was guiding the big tire under the bale chamber to keep it rolling straight, when it hung up. Pulling it back up only made the situation worse. I walked around front to free the hitch when the wide left tire on the baler dug in & twisted on the side rail, snapping the axle & sending the wheel flying toward the flowerbed. I write this little bit of information to clue you, dear reader, as to the luck I have in life. I could use some info on this baler to further prevent any catastrophies while I am the owner of this machine. When/where were these produced? Whose knotters are used? Required horse power? The baler is in need of some T.L.C. & I would like to acquire the appropriate manuals (owners, shop, parts) & some of the original brochures/buyer's guide to aide my ailing haymaker. It is my first Allis Chalmers-anything & I am excited to learn about it. Decent looking machine! Thanx in advance for any help.

Hey Tim, I took a wander to the front yard to look again for a model number. Nothing. I assumed it was an 1140 because it was the last 4 digits of the serial number that were spaced from the rest i.e. ser. #556881 1140. The only number I could find was 44 & that's on the thrower. I found a 2 page ad currently on ebay for the 303 bale chief. It looks similar except for the thrower. There are no wheels on the pick-up header on my baler, but they may have been an option on the one in the picture. The extra sheet metal on the thrower in the picture may have been removed from mine. As a matter of fact, my thrower looks to have been a poorly executed addition by the previous owner.

An 1140? A-C never had that model number that I know of. 200, 302, 303, 442, 443, 444 are the models I know of. The 200 was the first A-C small square baler, made in Mold, Wales (UK) and sold in 1962-63. The others were made in LaPorte, Indiana by A-C, from 1963 until A-C quit the business in 1975. If AGCO still has any parts, they won"t be cheap. I"ve been told knotter parts can be matched up to New Holland stock, but there"s no official cross-reference.
