D-17 Final Drives

1963 Gas D-17. Final drives are pretty noisy when you first start to use the tractor. You hear them chatter and it's pretty bad when you turn. After you've been working it for a while they get quiet.
Sometimes I could swear It feels like something is binding if only for an instant. I get the feeling like the tractor slows up for just a tick of time but that could just be me. Question - Do I need to rebuild the final drives and should I tackle this myself? About how much does it cost to rebuild a pair of final drives?

When I did the seals on mine, I don't remember a drain on the final drives. You need to pull the lower cover off. Allis sells those gaskets cheaper than you can buy the material for gaskets. With the cover off, you can inspect the big gear real well. Take off the wheel, and you can generally tell if the bearings are loose by pushing and pulling. If you have brake problems, that is a big deal. I think replacing bearing and seals is easier than doing the brakes (I did those, too, when I did the seals).

First reply was right on target; drain the oil and check for metal shavings. Could be bearings or gear problem.

I had a similar problem and played with it for fear of tearing into it. It finally locked up so I had no choice. Found that the brake on one side had broken a spring which got into things and ripped the lining off the shoe. Chunks from that got cought in the adjustments and was locking the wheel and ruining the drum. Lesson learned; check it out!!!!! !!: new drum cost me just over $700 from AGCO!!!!! !!!!! !!

Not difficult other than weight. Luckily I have a shop crane to do the heavy lifting.

Can't say a lot about them but if I where you I would start off by draining them and seeing what the oil looks like. I'd say you probably have a bearing going bad and or water in one or both of them.
Looking at the oil will tell you a lot. If it looks like you have silver flacks in the oil you have something comeing aprt in there
