wd45 Tune Up?

My new-to-me WD45 seems to run fine with the exception of some "popping" and backfiring when it is cold. The backfiring occurs any time I back off the throttle and I actually see flames shooting out the exhaust! It is pretty cool actually, but I am assuming that something is amiss. Where should I start with the troubleshooting?

That backfire is the best part of a WD45, rev her up and close the throttle real quick, BLAB BLAB, fire out of the muffler YEE HAW!

Carb maybe set a littloe on the rich side and what is happening is when you back off on it you get raw gas in the exhaust manifold and then when it get to a point that theres just the right amount of air and gas it lights up and theres where you get the flames.
