HD4 Torque Converter Housing oil Leak

I have a 1972 HD4 crawler loader which had a hydrolic oil leak comming out of the Torque Converter housing. Took engine out and found the Torque Converter drive plate was broken.I assumed the leak was from the oil seal in the Stator Support, so i replaced the oil seal and drive plate. I put engine back in and still had the same oil leak. Took engine back out and had Torque Converter pressure tested and it checked out OK. Remounted Torque Converter to flywheel and total runout is less than .010. Put in another new oil seal and also a new Stator Support gasket. All parts were purchased from the original dealer that sold the tractor. When the engine was put back togheter i still had the oil leak. Seems like the oil seal is not as rugged as the original. Has anyone run into this problem before? The Torque Converter Hub is very smooth with no damage. The Stator support spacer shows a little wear on one end of it but i really do not know as to why it is needed other than to control the flex of the Torque Converter Drive Plate. I also changed the Hydrolic filter and the Manifold O-rings. Thanks for any help.

Does the torque converter run in a bushing in the trans like a car. If so this bushing may have worn out from the broken drive plate. This might case the converter to wobble a little breaking the seal on the converter. My 2 cents.

Thanks for the reply Kent. I was thinking of installing a new bushing the last time i had the engine out but the bushing is not available without also purchasing the stator support retaining assy. But thinking about it makes a lot af sense, since a .005 wobble would max out the Torque Converter runout. I guess I'm going shopping so thanks for your info. I'll get back to the forum as to whether it worked or not. Thanks

If you can find out the O.D. and I.D. of the bushing you might find something you can use to replace just the bushing. There might be a bushing used in a large truck auto that is the same or there might be a cam bearing/bushing that is the same or could need minor modification to be usable.

Hi Kent
Not quite sure of the bushing. I have not had time to take the engine out but as i recall the bushing was split and would not fit inside the Torque Converter Hub. I thought it was made to go around the hub but i cannot see the bushing or how it fits once the engine is back together. When i take the engine out i'll have to check the fit with the Bushing and Oil Seal inside the Stator Support Retainer assembly and go from there. Thanks for your help.
