I have an old B and am comverting it to a 3PH. The lift cyl isn"t strong enough and way to fast, so I am going to use a 2" X 10" cyl that I currently have. I only want one way power so that isn"t a problem. The problem is I want to "dead end" of the cyl to hold fluid to increase resivior capacity. Where can I plumb the line from the "dead end"? Do I need to go back to the filler plug, or is there a port on the valve that I can let the fluid return to? Any help will be appreciated, Thanks, Nat

Most of the time when you use a double acting cylinder on a single acting system you put a filtered vent plug in the other side. If you want increase oil capacity, have the cylinder extended when you check the trans oil. Whe you are running with the cylinder collapsed this may cause some seals to leak oil.

Hi Nat,

Here's something to think about. If the piston rod in your 2" bore cyl is larger than that of the standard B cyl (0.75"), you can get a greater lift force and a slower travel speed by tying the two cylinder ports together. For instance, if your 2" bore, double acting cylinder has a 1" dia piston rod, you'd get a 71% increase in lift force by directing the output from your pump to both cylinder ports simultaneously. The speed would also be lower than that with the B cyl. Also be aware that directing the pump output (3000+ psi) to only the side opposite the piston rod (the full 2" dia side) will permit a lift force of over seven times that from the standard B cyl. If something should hang up, things could easily get broken in the process if not designed to take that much force.

the present trans/hydraulic capacity is adequate. i also added an elbow on the fill port and keep about an extra 1/2 to 1 quart of oil inside.--- works o.k.

Only way I can think of to what you are describing would be to return the dead end to the drain plug. Otherwise wouldn't you dump the non presurized end of the cylinder the first time you cycled the ram? The end of the dead end would have to be below oil level for it to refull when the ram retracted or it would just draw air. I suspect the resivour which is the transmission on a B has enough capacity to fill a 2x10 cylinder without worring about returning oil from the non pressurized side of the cylinder. The hydraulic system of a B is a very high pressure system 3000 psi if I recall corectly. Make sure your cylinder can handle the pressure.

Thanks for all the replies. I am building the 3PH from scratch. I used the plates that have a 1" dowell and a hole for a 5/8 bolt. I have 1 for each side and welded a piece of 3" x 4" x 3/8" angle between them so I can take it off if needed. I made the lift arms from 3/4 X 2 1/2 Flat bar with drawbar swivel ends welded on. I welded 4 pieces of 3" X 3" x 5/8 flat bar on the angle at the appropriate places for the lift arm pins and stabilizer bars. I made the rockshaft arms out of 5/8" X 2" flatbar with the ends from a top link, one on each rockshaft arm. I used the rest of the toplink to make the adjustable link on 1 side and made the other out of 3/4 solid rod with a U welded on each end. It works fine but noy enough power, hence the need to use a bigger cylinder. I have a 2" X 10" that works good, but a little fluid will leak by the packing and I can't find a rebuild kit. I put new O-rings in it and it is OK, but figured if I plumbed the "deadend" back to the sump any leakage would go there instead of on my new paint. Does anyone have a homemade 3PH on a B? I am wondering if I need to mount the top link on the rockshaft of fab a bracket under the shaft. Any imput is appreciated. Later, Nat
