I have acquired a D15 which works great, but it keeps wearing out the battery - seems as though its not getting charged by the generator. I have limited fix-it knowhow so I appreciate various posts related to this problem which I've used to correct the wiring, replace and polarized a new regulator. Yet the ammeter always reads zero. The B post on the reg and both sides of ammeter read 12 volts. Yet I only get 1/2 volt on the generator's A & F posts when engine is running - shouldn't it read about 14 volts? Also when I turn on lights with engine running, the ammeter goes positive - it this correct?
Would appreciate any guidance as don't want to take generator out for repair unless necessary.

You guys have all been very helpfull - thanks.
As suggested by Steve, I jumped the F terminal on the gen to ground and indeed, the battery voltage indicated 16.85 volts then tried Texas Denny's advice and got same result. So looks like my genny is good (YES!) and problem lies elsewhere. As to ammeter being hooked backwards,is the "battery side" the right side when facing the ammeter dial? Will follow John-T's step-by-step advice next.

My neighbors for miles heard me holler "YAHOO!!" today as my d15 finally began charging!
The key was Polarizing the generator - that did the trick.

I dont know right from left on that tractor and how that ammeter is attached, but I can tell you the ammeters SUPPLY side terminal has but ONE WIRE to the battery or starter switch/solenoid where the big battery cable attaches while its other LOAD TERMINAL is what wire to the BAT terminal on the Voltage Regulator PLUS wires to the input terminal to power loads like lights and/or ignition. Again, if it reads backwards, swap leads side to side. If its correct if you turn lights or ignition on NOT running it should swing over to - discharge, sooooo if shes swinging to + charge, its backwards so swap the leads to correct that. My troubleshooting procedure in Para 5 will let you know if you have a genny or a VR problem

I have a Ferguson 20 with 6 volts and positive ground. Your assistance to Bert Wayland has been my authoritative guideance in trying to get the little beauty to charge and it will only charge with the field terminal grounded. New voltage regulator and generator is fine.
In following your checklist, there is no wire from the field post to the field terminal on the voltage regulator. This is on a 4 post voltage regulator. What is the field post on the voltage regulator versus the field terminal?
Also, the old Ferguson wiring diagram shows the arm wire going to the 4th post on the regulator and a wire going from there to the coil. What would be it"s purpose and how would I shut the tractor off if it were connected?
It charges a nice 15 amps with the field grounded on the generator.
Any advise you can give me on getting the thing to charge without the field shorted will be greatly appreciated!

Bert, FIRST of all the ammeter must be wired bass ackwards cuz if the lights or ignition (unless a Magneto) are turned on tractor not running, it should swing over to - discharge...if it swings to + charge, it needs it leads reversed or else you gotta switch battery polarity and repolarize the genny to your new ground before firing her up..

Often times farmers might swap grounds from the original and if they do and dont reverse the ammeter leads it will read just opposite of what it should.

Next, you Polarize the Genny NOT the Voltage Regulator. The genny can charge at Pos or Neg ground if its polarized and the VR is compatible with either Polarity.

Next, YES if the charging system is working, at RPM the battery voltage and the BAT terminal on the VR and the gennys ARM post ought to rise from the 12.6 volts (what 12 volt battery is setting if charged and okay) setting to over 13 and in the low 14 range. The open unloaded output of a genny on its ARM terminal really dont tell you all that much, its at what voltage it can be when connected up to a load like a battery that tells if its working.

Okay, this is a lil ling winded and repeats some of what I said above, but its my Troubleshooting Procedure for Non Charging and if you follow it through step by step it will tell you (see Para 5) if non charging is due to a bad genny or a bad VR.

TROUBLESHOOTING CHARGING SYSTEMS

ARE YOU SURE THE AMMETER IS WIRED CORRECT AND WORKS????? If you turn the lights or ignition on (if coil ignition not a mag) when she�s not running, the ammeter should swing over to the - discharge direction, does yours??? Are BOTH the ammeter terminals reading hot battery voltage?? They MUST !!!!! ! There�s but one wire on the ammeters Supply (from battery/starter) terminal while its other Load terminal wires to the BAT terminal on a Cutout relay or VR PLUS wires to feed loads like lights or ignition, unless where a 4 terminal VR is used where lights n ignition are fed from the LOAD terminal on the VR.

To Polarize the Generator, first temporarily dead ground the Gens Field post to case/frame, then momentarily flash jump a wire from the Cutout Relay or VR's "BAT" terminal over to its GEN (or ARM) terminal and you ought to get a small spark. Same things accomplished by momentarily flash jumping a hot wire (BAT terminal on Cutout Relay or VR or starter post etc) direct to the Gens ARM post to get the spark.

TROUBLESHOOTING A CHARGING PROBLEM IN CLASS A DELCO TYPE SYSTEMS

1) For a good working Gen to get to and charge the battery, it has to have a path usually from the Gens ARM post,,,,, ,,,,to and through the Cutout Relay (between its GEN and BAT terminals, regardless if on a VR or Relay),,,,, ,,,up to the Load (NOT to battery) side of the Ammeter,,,,, ,,,to and through the Ammeter,,,,, ,,,,from BAT side of Ammeter to ungrounded battery terminal, often via the starter lug post. Is yours wired that way or equivalent ??? The ammeter should read hot battery voltage on BOTH terminals, does yours??? Even if an ammeter were stuck (but still continuous) as RPM increases the battery voltage should rise from 12.6 to near 14 volts and/or the lights glow brighter (half that on 6 volt systems). Have you tried that in case the ammeter isn�t working right?????

2) If the above is so, the BAT terminal on the VR or Cutout Relay MUST ALWAYS READ HOT BATTERY VOLTAGE. Does yours??? If not, the Gen cant get to and charge the battery.

3) The Gen to VR (if it has one) wiring is as follows:

BAT on VR to ammeters load (NOT battery) side

ARM (or GEN) on VR to Gens Armature post.

FLD on VR to Gens Field post.

(L) Load (if you have a 4 wire VR) up to BAT supply input terminal on switch to feed loads like lights and ignition.

WIRING ON CUTOUT RELAYS: They wire BAT side to ammeters Load terminal,,,,, GEN side to gens Armature post. On cutout relay systems, the Gens Field post is wired to the light switch where it gets a dead ground for high charge or a resistive ground for low charge. Therefore, there must be a good connection from the Gens Field post up to the switch PLUS the switch is good and it�s well grounded !!!!! !!

4. THE GEN AND VR OR CUTOUT RELAY MUST BE WELL GROUNDED AND THE BELT GOOD N TIGHT. If any doubt, run a ground wire from the grounded battery post or clean solid frame member direct to the Gen and see what happens????? ????? ????? ????? ????

NOW, if the Gen and VR are grounded,,,,,all is wired correct,,,,, ,,BAT terminal on VR or Cutout Relay is HOT,,,,, ,,Belt is tight,,,,, ,,,Ammeter is good n continuous n works but she wont charge, have you had the batteries tested lately????? Is there electrolyte above all the plates and no cells have a gray or milky appearance????? A bad battery may not accept a charge you know!!!!! !! If the battery checks okay, proceed below to see if its a Gen or VR problem (AFTER you have insured the wiring per the above)

TO DETERMINE IF ITS A GEN OR VR OR CUTOUT RELAY PROBLEM

5. a) VOLTAGE REGULATOR SYSTEM: With the tractor running, temporarily ground the Gens Field post to case. If she charges then but NOT otherwise, the VR may be bad, or a wires missing from VR's Field post to the Field terminal on the VR, or the VR isn�t well grounded.

b) IF IT�S A CUTOUT RELAY SYSTEM and she charges only if you dead ground the Field but NOT otherwise, its either a bad switch or the switch isn�t well grounded or else the wires bad or open from the Gens Field post up to the switch. INSURE THAT GOOD SWITCH GROUND AND WIRING

6. If she still don�t charge, leave the Field grounded and jump a wire across from the VR or Cutout Relays BAT terminal over to its GEN terminal (jump by passes the cutout relay) and see if she charges. If then but not otherwise, a VR's cutout relay isn�t working correct (maybe points burned/carboned) or a Cutout Relays NOT working or not wired correct.

7. With the 2 steps above, you have basically by passed the VR or Cutout relays functions, so if she still don�t charge, you're left with a bad battery or wiring or the Gen itself.

8. MOTOR TEST. You can Motor test the Gen. If its grounded and you remove the belt and apply hot battery voltage direct to its ARM Post and have the Field Post dead grounded to frame, it should motor n run well (Armature n Brushes and Commutator likely okay). Then, if you next remove the Fields ground and it speeds up some, the Fields probably good. If it passes both those tests, it should charge, and if not, it may be a wiring or battery or grounding problem. The hot battery voltage may be taken off the VR's BAT terminal or the starter post or the battery itself for this test.

9. Typical Gen problems may be the brushes are worn down or the hold down spring assemblies are stuck/corroded/dirty and arent pushing the brushes tight down against the commutator. Check those things out. Worse may be bad fields or armature etc. Air and WD 40 etc can clean and free them, the hold downs must be free n snap and hold the brushes DOWN TIGHT and they cant be worn down too low.

SUMMARY: Check the wiring,,,,,the grounds,,,,, insure BAT on VR or Relay is hot,,,,, ,check battery (maybe load tested and Specific Gravity checked),,,,, ,,,good tight belt,,,,, ,insure ammeter is continuous (BOTH sides HOT),,,,, see if battery voltage rises above 12.6 (half that for 6 volt system) and/or light glow brighter,,,,, ,,,do the Field and cutout relay VR by pass checks,,,,, ,,insure the Gens brushes arent worn down and the hold down springs are free n clean and push the brushes down tight,,,,, ,,,,,check the connections,,,,, ,,,try the Gen Motor Test to see if its good.

You may just have a bad battery or bad ground or connection if the Gen and VR or relay are okay. Good Luck n God Bless, let us all know.

to test while running, jumper the "F" terminal of the generator to ground. if that portion of the regulator is bad, the system will start charging.---- if not, keep the "F" grounded and put a volt meter across the "G" and "F" terminals of the generator and you should get 14 volts or so (with the regulator connected).---- if not, pull the "A" wire off the generator and measure the output of the generator without the regulator connected. the generator will put out about 20 volts non regulated if it is good. if you have less that 15 volts out of the generator with the "A" off and the "F" grounded, the generator is toast.

Bert, you've got a tiger by the tail. The only thing that I am sure of is that you have the wiring switched on the ammeter.

If you have a diesel, the voltage should be 12 volt. If you have gas, it should be 6 volt positive ground (unless it has been changed).

To determine if the generator works, put a voltmeter across the battery terminals. Remove the wire connected to the field terminal of the generator and tape the end so it doesn't short to ground. Start the engine. Connect a jumper from the field terminal to the positive terminal of the battery. If the generator is working you should get a high charge rate of 20 to 30 amps. Check the voltage on the field wire that was connected to the generator. It should be low when the jumper is connected and about battery voltage when you remove the jumper. Turn off tractor.

If all this worked as explained, reconnect the field terminal and the generator should charge.

Thanks for timely reply!
The D15 is gas with a 12-volt Positive-ground battery so previous owner must have upgraded. Does this change any of your recommendations?

As to ammeter, it never read anything before when light were on, but when I replaced the regulator it read negative with light on. But since no charge to battery, I polarized the regulator, and now the ammeter reads positive (still not charging)
Appreciate your help.

WITH THE LIGHTS ON THE AMP METER SHOULD READ NEG, IF TRACTOR IS NOT RUNNING.
DO YOU HAVE A 12 VOLT GENERATOR? SHOULD BE STAMPED ON IT. 6 VOLT GENNY WOULD NOT CHARGE A 12 VOLT BATTERY, UNLESS ITS BEEN REWORKED. BOB
