AC Hand Clutch Start Date

Hi Folks,

I was asked when AC started offering the Hand Clutch/Foot Clutch system to allow for live PTO.

I thought it was on the WC model, but then we saw a styled WC that did not have the hand clutch lever.

Can someone fill me in on when this feature was first offered? I don't have a copy of Mr. Swinford's book to refer to.

1948 WD. Some aftermarket hand clutches were available for the WC, but nothing factory. One was not even enclosed- just fiber disc clutch spinning in the open between the transmission and differential- where the power lift mounted. Open to dirt and dust.

There was a "throwout" clutch offered by the factory for the WC to facilitate stopping while keeping the pto spinning, something very handy when pulling a pto powered roto-baler.

I checked with a collector/mechanic friend about the clutch, he agrees with you- thought that the factory did have a hand clutch option, although most he's seen were aftermarket, like the one Dethmer Mfg of IA was selling around 1960.
