Can someone tell me if there is a difference in a WD and a WD-45 head.

I resently swaped a WD45 head for a WD head every thing worked out fine and there was no differance in compression. there are a few things that you need to do though, because the wd45 Head is thicker you need to use shorter head bolts or unscrew the bolts out of a WD block, such as I did. You will also need to use the WD45 Water manifold. You will find that the push rods and rocker arms are of the same height so dont worry. Afterwards you will need to do some fine tuning on the valvels, for some reason after I changed over, the valves were left slightly open. With a little loosining and adjusting everything came together just fine, Runs better than it ever did and with the same amount of power. Have faith the old girls are interchangeable. Piece of cake. Dont hesitate to E mail me if you have any problems.

Good luck Dale

Actually, the rocker arm pedestals are higher on the WD head; that's why the pushrod length can be the same.

yes your right, that is the reason behind the new adjustment procedures required.

I think that the early WC cyl head had only 12 (1/2 inch) studs to attach it to the block; referred to as a 12 hole or bolt head. The later WC and early WD heads had 12 (1/2 inch) studs and 3 (3/8 inch) studs to attach them to the block; referred to as a 15 hole or bolt head. The late WD and all WD 45 (I think) heads are "taller" or thicker and used 12 (1/2 inch) BOLTS and 3 (3/8 inch) BOLTS to attach them to the head; also referred to as a 15 hole or bolt head. As far as I can tell the combustion chambers in all of these cyl heads is a flat machined surface with only a very small recess for the spark pulg tip. The cylinder and the top of the piston actually form the combustion chamber. There were and are a large variety of "piston tops" in different compression ratios for each applacation (gas, LP gas, and multi-fuel) for these engines. Flat. domed, turbo-bowl (round), and turbo-bowl (heart shaped) that I know of. If you put WD 45 Pistons in a WD you will probably have very low compression. If you put high compression WD pistons in a WD 45 you will probably have metel to metal interference. Hope this helps, bentorbroke

Some small additional info on the WC, WD, and WD 45 cyl heads. The WC 12 bolt, the WC 15 bolt, and the early WD 15 bolt heads are approximately 3 inches "tall" , high or thick. The late WD and WD 45 15 bolt heads are approximately 3 13/16 inches "tall", high or thick. I think they all use the same valves and valve guides. Most of the late WD and WD 45 heads/valve assemblies that I have seen use exhaust valve rotators. Hope this helps, have fun, bentorbroke

Don't quote me , but I think there is. The WD-45 has the power crater combustion chamber with 25 more cubic inches. I think I heard that switching from a WD-45 head to a WD head there would be a loss of compression so much so that it would not run well. Anybody else know for sure? Hope this helps, Brian

The spark plug hole location is also different on the WD-45 head. Much closer to the center of the cylinder.
