how can i tell the dif. between wd/wd45? i have one or the other, but not sure which.

Get the tractor and motor s/n and we would know a lot more - all the data I've got on 45's says they start with 45- while the 201's start WD in WD's or W in WC (some overlap in WF & W Speed Patrols with WD)

That WD I posted on the previous page under MY NEW TOY is a late 52 (127xxx)with a curved shifter and a WD motor. I don't know its history except it was a family tractor. I'll try and find out more.

The serial # is the best bet. A late WD can have a curved shifter, and a early WD-45 can have the plate. I have a 53 WD-45 that my great grandfather bought brand new, never had the engine block replaced and has the plate on the side. But as someone mentioned before you can mix and match to get a WD with a curved wd-45 shifter tranny and vice versa.

That sure would be a valuable tractor if you could prove it was a WD45 that came from the factory with a WD engine. What was the bore and stroke of the engine when it left the factory? Did it have WD guts or WD45 guts? What are the serial number and engine number? Do you have the bill of sale that backs up your theory?

It had 45 guts when we overhauled it. I do not need a bill of sale as I know it to be right. My grandfather started farming with it in the late 50's after his dad gave it to him. Has a WD-45 serial# and a curved shifter, snap coupler, and alot more snort than a WD. The blocks are interchangable, so I don't see why they wouldn't go ahead and use up extra ones laying around if they had them on the new WD-45's?

"WD" production ended with serial #160384 in 1954. WD45 production began with serial #146607 in 1953. In the overlap period (between #146607 and #160384) the "WD" had a more powerful engine but was still sold as the "WD". A corporate decision was then made to update the name to indicate the more powerful engine and that was incorporated at serial #160385) That was the approximate time that the WD45 sticker was affixed and advertising of the new tractor began. It was completly in keeping with AC policy that existing parts and stock be used up. Therefore, it is not only possible, but probable to see these variations, not on one tractor, but on up to 13,777 of them. YES! THE WD WAS SOLD WITH A MORE POWERFUL ENGINE BEFORE WD45 BADGING AND NAMING STARTED! Some on this board are more purist than realist.

That would explain a lot as I have seen a WD motor with what appeared to be a n original Power Crater sticker - as I recall it was an odd serial number that did not make any sense at the time - do you have further documentation on the breal at WD160384 and the motor s/n that overlapped this time frame?

Done that myself,redid bottem end with 45 crank n rods gives alot of snort,also swaped out wd from trans back with wd45,the 45's had a much smother and quieter tranny,so I have mutts but a 45 engine block has no plate,which is the same motor in a D17 and 170 gas,226 ci.

Can be hard to tell since the WD and WD45 eighne will fit in either tractor. To tell if its a WD engine it will have a side plate on the right hand side of the engine. No plate then its a WD45 engine but the rest could still be a WD. Serial numbers are on the rear end left side on a flat place, get them then look under rearch&info on the left and see what year it is.

The quickest way to tell without looking for serial #s is to look at the distributor side of engine,if it has a rectangular plate bolted to the block its a WD,no plate a WD45,but a lot of other parts interchanged,so curved shifter is not a good indicater,also the last production WD(53)started the curved shifter.
