Question to AC 170 owners

I was investigating a problem on my AC 816B backhoe. It's a 1972 and in the past, I've occasionally found cross over components from AC farm tractors (used a 170D Bell housing on it when my old one broke). Working on the brakes, I was surprised to see that the linkage for the brake appears to be actuated by the main hydraulics on the system. It's all a one piece casting, the front half has a plunger from the brake pedal and the primary hydraulics flow through that casting. The back half is the sump for brake fluid which runs into a separate valve that is electrically actuated to do individual wheel locking.

What I'm guessing is that the brake fluid plunger is actuated hydraulically by a small internal ram that is actuated by the brake pedal opening it's valve thus giving enough force to have "power brakes", that's proven by the main pump dragging the idle down when you depress the pedal. Anyone ever heard of something like that on the ag machines of the era? If so, I may need cross reference casting number to see if they truly match. Did the 170 or 170D have something similar if you happen to have one of those??

It's not like they shared much of anything with other construction equipment of the era. Thankfully the engine and drive train shares a bit with the 170 Diesel (different bore and stroke but otherwise identical). Wondering if the braking system does.

Chris

The brakes on my 170 diesel are mechanical linkage. No hydraulics about them.
