Pulling the sleeves? Cylinders? Is that tough or just beat them from the bottom, out the top? Any special tools? And putting in new sleeves? Like I said, I"ve done small engines and rings, but this is all new. And how do you seat in the new sleeves if I go that route? Just slide in? Help

Every one has their own way. You just have to pick the path that fits you.
You can make it a project lasting days or weeks or you can strip the engine down to the bare block in less than an hour as the one in the picture below. The engine in the picture had the head and pan removed before I took it off the tractor. After it was laying on 6"X 6" blocks it looked like this in less than an hour. The tools used are all in the picture. I tried using a block of wood years ago and the wood block would split and take some of the hammer shock. If you look at the steel bar you will see both ends smushed from use. It is only used to remove wet sleeves and has been used for years. All different tractor brands I might add. I timed the removal of the sleeves on the block in the picture and it was just under 10 minutes. I use a big big hammer and have never broke even a sleeve removing them. I only make two hits in one spot. The next whack is on the opposit side or close. Some drop out on the first hit. Some take some work. This one took severak whacks.

The next picture is of the block and showing it being cleaned for new sleeves. I will place a link to more pictures as well. The ares where the O rings seal must be clean enough (buildup of crud such as water lime deposits and rust) to allow the new sleeve without O rings to slide down in place and rotate 360 degrees by hand. With O rings installed you can feel the resistance when the O ring starts to enter the sealing area. You should then place an wood block over the sleeve and bump it down with the palm of your hand.(not a hammer) You will then feel the sleeve go down a slight bit easier until the second O ring starts to enter. If not done this way and you do not pinch/cut an O ring and have a leak is was because of LUCK not by doing correctly. Some have said I pounded mine in with a hammer and did not have a leak. Good for them.

Ken, I'm not an expert on this but I have done it on a two WD tractors and a Case 811. All three went about the same. I think you can get sleeve pullers at some auto part stores (NAPA), particularily in small communities that serve farming areas. I made my puller by finding a disk the outside diameter of the sleeve and about an inch thick (about 5" diameter). I drilled a 5/8" hole in the center. Since I have a laythe, I cut a step down so it would be a cinch to center this disk on bottom of the sleeve. I then found a 1" thick bar about 1 1/2" wide and long enough to go 1" past the cylinder wall on each side (about 6 1/2"). I also drilled 5/8" hole in the middle of this bar. I got a 5/8" standard thread , threaded rod about 12" long. Place a couple more bars on the top of the block such that they are slightly beyond the edge of the sleeve and on opposite sides of the sleeve and place the large bar accossthese bars so that the 5/8" hole is centered on the sleeve. Then, put the threaded rod through the hole in the disk and the hole in the bar, put a nut on each end and turn the nuts in clockwise fashion. Sleeves come right out.

If you clean the sleeves and the block very well, they should go in easily before you put on the o-rings. If they need to be forced, more cleaning is required. Use canola oil on the o-rings and the the seal area at the bottom of the block - plenty of it. If every thing is clean and smooth, there will be some resistance to putting the sleeves in but a few raps with a rubber hammer should do the trick. If there is no resistance, the o-rings are too small. If it won't go, the o-rings are too large. I've had both experiences.

I wouldn't beat on these sleeves with a hammer. Most are cast iron which breaks pretty easily when hit with a hammer.
