D10 hi crop - worth fixing?

a sugar cane farmer gave me a '61 d10 hicrop w/ a broken conrod that punched 2 holes in the block.both fenders are rusted out,all 4 tires hold air but need replacing (10-36 rears,5-16 fronts) and it has been converted to delco 12 volt. being a hicrop i guess it is somewhat "rare" but i'd like to know if i'm headed down a road to nowhere. i found a complete engine for about $2000.00 thanks in advance for any advice.

Nah,you don't want to restore that one. Let me take it off your hands.Hehe. By all means that would be a nice one to restore. At least you wouldn't have half a dozen like it if you went to a show.I would trhink there's an engine out there somewhere cheaper than two grand. Good luck with it. Don

I think $2000 for an engine is outrageous. You can get a block on Ebay for $100. A complete rebuild kit with all new parts (cylinders, pistons,rings, bearings) is less than $500. If you get $100 block, you may only need rings and a crankshaft and some rods. I saw a complete running engine on ebay a couple of weeks ago for $250. With a little work, you could have this going for $500.

Never heard of such and here in Ohio was never any standard D 10 or D 12 to speak of sold

$2000.00 for a replacement engine sounds high to me but yes I would restore it for sure. $2000.00 would buy a parts tractor to help in the restore.D10's aren't extremely rare but a Hi Crop is very different.
