Engine #W215361. I wrote about 6 months ago with the stuck engine, water, rust. Got her out and removed the pistons. Never ever been this far on an engine but I am in no hurry. Pulled the engine back in May. Pistons pulled on sunday, they are aluminum, 4 rings, PN 224916. I guess I should replace the rings??? The pistons are soaking and they look pretty good, but I need to get the gum out of the ring grooves still. Reading the manual it says the scraper type compression ring is installed in the third groove. 3rd down? Next to the ventilation ring? If I buy new rings, how do I tell the scraper type? I've only worked on small engines and they talk of the break in the ring being opposite the other rings or 120 degrees off. Does it matter where the break/or gap goes? I need a primer on rings. I don't think I have over-sized rings. If and when I get to the installation into the cylinder, is the a tool for compressing the ring like a small engine? From the top or bottom? You'll are great.....thank for the help. Maybe some day we will meet in A/C heaven.

Funny, we're at the same point in our work, only I'm working on WF#219. I've got to do bearings all the way around, new o-rings, and piston rings. Hopefully, she'll be running by October as there's this little parade I wanna run her in. We'll see.

it would be a good idea to pull sleeves and change o-rings while you got it apart too.
if you change rings make sure you use cast rings and not chrome...chrome will not seat unless its a fresh bore and engine will use alot of oil...rings are usually marked 1-2-3-etc on envelopes...be sure and read on package which side goes up too...piston installs from top...i use a suitable size hose clamp and lots of wd 40 to compress rings and install...keep #1 ring gap away from exhaust valve and then stagger the rest around piston.

i was always told that the rings move, rotate, some as the engine runs. true? Bob

Pulling the sleeves? Cylinders? Is that tough or just beat them from the bottom, out the top? Any special tools? And putting in new sleeves? Like I said, I"ve done small engines and rings, but this is all new.

BCnT, I haven't heard this suggestion about the number 1 ring. I assume that you mean the gap is to be away from the exhaust valve. Do you know the theory on that? What happens if the gap is close to the exhasut valve? I've rebuilt a bunch of these but never paid any attention to that. It has all worked out OK but these tractors (whether I keep them or not) don't get many hours.

I'll do it from now on. Doesn't take much effort.

It is bone dry here. Had a fire 4 miles due south of my ranch. The town due north 9 miles further was preparing for an evacuation. High winds and super dry made it hard to control. Had 3 helicopters and a spotter airplane in addition to 10 ground crews. Got it out one Wednesday evening and then flared up again on Thursday. Finally got it stopped with bulldozers making fire breaks. Water did little good. It was about 1/4 to half mile from my place when they got it under control. Burned mostly in my direction because of southerly winds. We dodged a major bullit - maybe a howitzer. Fire was started by a spark from a railroad train!

Got another month or so of serious risk.

Lately the high temp in this region has been San Marcus. I suppose you're getting some of that ,too.
