The function of the shock absorber is to prevent oscillation. The shock does not support your weight. A shock from another application might work if it is the right size. If it is from a car, it will probably provide a fairly stiff ride as it is designed to work with a 500# load if it is a rear shock and 1000# if it is a front shock. Best chance would be a rear shock from a small front wheel drive car. You'd still need the spring.

These entire seats come up on Ebay pretty often. It would probably be cheaper and easier to get a used seat that way. Or maybe you can get just the parts you need.
