wd radiator overflowing

I just finished restoring a wd. I started it up and ran it for about two minutes. I just put water in the radiator to check for leaks and just to see if the tractor would run. I decided I would drain it and put an antifreeze solution in later if everything was ok. After about two minutes, alot of water started coming from the overflow tube down the bottom of the tractor. I am not sure why it did this. I believe the thermostat to be installed correctly and I filled the radiator up to about two inches from the top with water. Originally there was a thermostat housing with a port for a bypass hose, but it was plugged, as well as the hole in the water pump. The housing was broken and I ordered a new one with no bypass hose opening. I installed the new thermostat and put new hose on. I also got a new water pump and plugged the hole, just like the other water pump I took off. I don't see why this is happening, but maybe someone with more experience can offer some insight.

On those systems you need to put just enough water in to cover the core by maybe an inch. Any more then that and it will push some water out.

if i didn't fill it to within an inch it was real close. After all that water overflowed, I couldn't see the water level anymore.
What's going on?

You could also have had air in the system and till the thermostat opend it will push water out then when it opens the air come out and then your underfull. Sort of a catch 22 and it can be a pain to get the air out and most of the time it takes refilling it twice to get things just as they should be.

without the bypass hose you will have air pockets...until theyre worked out youre gonna lose water...then it should settle down...if it bugs you take thermostat out and drill a half inch hole in it...that will take the place of a bypass port.
