Double bottom plow for Allis Chalmers B

Hi. I have a 1950s vintage Allis Chalmers B. I am from New England, and have found a double bottom AC plow for sale with a snap coupler which I would like to purchase, however the fellow selling it was uncertain whether the B is powerful enough to pull a double bottom plow. I would like opinions? thank you.

When did they put a snap coupler on a B? Never heard of it.

I have a B and a C. Use the same plows on either tractor. My B has the adjustable front axle and the same real wheels as the C. Both weigh almost the same. In our heavy clay soil, I don,t believe that either one would pull a 2 bottom very well. Maybe they would if they werre 2 12s. The main disadvantage to the B is that it is faster than the C. This is not good in rocky soil, as the plows are a fixed hitch with no provision for break away. If you plow in second gear in rocky soil, you better have good dental insurance becsuse you are going to "bite the steering wheel"if you hit a fixed rock. These are not very good plows in heavy and/or rocky soil, But they are handy and are easily manuverable.

The "B" is a one-row tractor & the "C" is essentially the 2-row version of this tractor. The rear end width is about 12" wider on the "C" & has one of two different type narrow front ends or adjustable wide front. "B" is wide front only, most of which are fixed width, with much fewer available w/ adjustable fron ends. The "C" is also geared slightly lower than the "B".

Since the plow is a Snap-Coupler type this would be for a larger tractor like a WD. If you ground is real sandy I would think you will have problems.

Hi. Thanks for all of your input. Since I did get one affirmative response, I may consider trying it for fun, but I feel that a single bottom snap coupler is probaby the best way to go. I have looked so far in New Hampshire, and also on Ebay, but so far on Ebay, there are only two and three bottom snap coupler AC plows, no singles. Also, the ones on Ebay are usually from the midwest or the south, and not New England, and are usually "pick up only, no shipping". Are there any other places online where I could search for tractor implements that might be closer to me, or where the item is able to be be shipped? I would also like to find a sickle bar mower for my "B". Thanks for your input.

i had a b when i was a kid. pulled a single plow in second with ease. i tried a neighbors 2 bottom pull behind and could pull it in 2nd, no problem. so i bought a 2 bottom and never used the single again. Bob

Can't say for sure but I know back when we had a B it came with a single bottom 16 plow which was made just for that tractor. It might pull one if it was maybe a 2 bootm 12 but I don't think it would handle any thing bigger if it would even handle a 2-12

The model B is a one bottom plow tractor, Allis Chalmers came out with the Model C as their two plow tractor.

Question for you Steve. The B and the C have the same engine, same tranny but differant front ends, so how is it that a C was a 2 bottom plow tractor and not the B. Now if you had said the CA I would agree with you but the B and C are the same tractor other then the wide or narrow front ends on them

The B has a taller bull gear in the final drive. I dont remember off hand the number ot teeth each have but the B will move faster if tire size and RPM"s are the same. The tire size makes the difference in ground speed. I have one of my B"s on old 9X24"S and two others on 11.4X24"s. The B should pull 2 14 inch bottom on short tires real easy. 2 12 inch easyer yet. Just takes more weight. Dad farmed 148 acres with a Allis Chalmers C pulling a 2 14inch bottom pull type plow in heavy ground. It was on 10 inch rubber fully loaded with two sets of rear weights and a set of engine side weights. The B on 8 or 9 inch rubber and weighted down should do the same. Like you said same engine and same transmission. You would just need to match the ground speed to the C.

The C was a little heavier, and I think had a higher RPM rating. The trannys are the same between the 2 but the rear axle housing is wider on the C and gives it more weight. It really doesn't make sense why they sold 2 tractor that are pretty much the same other than that though.

Both the B and C I had where the same width so not sure. Aslo the catalog says all those parts are the same on both

Here are the exact words from "Allis Chalmers Farm Tractors and Crawlers Data Book"
"The Model C was the two-plow version of the one-plow Model B and came standard with a tricycle front axle with dual front wheels"

My brothers '42 B is alot narrower than my '47 C between the fenders and the gearboxes the wheel is mounted on. The earlier B's also have a different hub also that is flat with the wheel center held on by one big nut, as opposed to the C's 8 nuts. Most B's and C's are like this, and it is fairly easy to switch axle housings between them.

Notice the difference between the C and the B between the wheel and fender area.
