I'm looking at a JD 4430, 7800 hrs, Quad, SG cab with 3 scvs for $15000 from someone that is retiring. I'm also looking at a 1978 AC 7020, 3945 hrs, black belly, 12 spd Powershift, cab, 2 scvs for $7250 from a used farm equip place. They know the last 10 yrs of history on it. Both have about 124-125 hp with turbo. The AC has 301 ci. The JD has 404 ci. JD Dealer is 18 mi away. AC/AGCO Dealer is 19 mi away. I know AC can have torque limiter problems, but I think a good outfit for the price.
Any suggestions on which would be the better buy?

from what i've seen, 301 is pretty durable. most 404's i know of have been replaced with 466's. whether or not pump was turned up at time of failure, i don't know. if you went to 7030 you get the 426, i believe. you would be hard pressed to find a stouter diesel. maybe the innards of the tractor would last longer with the 301? anyhow, they are fairly cheap here in ne ohio.

the AC is more fuel efficient (1.5 to 2 gal less).More torque back up with a turbo engine. today all brands use turbo engine. Why do you talk of torque limiter problem . Power shift is a plus. try to clean the air filter on both tractor. try to fuel both tractor. and you will be able to have a good trip to somewhere in the world with the didderence in money and if someone tell you that the AC need repair you will have less chance at 3945 hrs than the deere at 7800 hres

For the record, the 4430 Deere DOES have a turbo, and they are a darned good tractor. It should have a LOT of life left at 7800 hours, if it has been taken care of at all. I do agree about them being a bit thirsty.

However, the price is a bit too high, even for a green lover like me!
