Well I was out working the pasture down with a rotary hoe and my old WD and was driving along, when I noticed a slight "tinking" sound coming from the front of the tractor.

I thought nothing of it, and I made another pass, and the sound hadn"t gone away. So I thought "hmmm, not good" and drove back to the shed. I shut the tractor off, let it sit for awhile, and went back to it. Turned it on, same thing. Can"t tell if it"s coming from the engine, the waterpump, or the alternator but it"s definitely from that frontal area. Nothing seems to be hitting anything, but the fan belt pulley is a little bit wobbly on the waterpump (possibly a bad bearing?)...

It"s not very loud, and depending on how fast the engine is revved up dictates how much (as in often) it "tinks". I didn"t notice a loss in power, just this noise.

Any ideas what this could be and what I could do to fix it... And whether or not it is safe to drive it in this condition? I"d at least like to drive it for another 15 minutes to get the implements put back away in storage before winter (including my tractor).

Well I don't know if this will help you much but for what it is worth. I noticed a rattle or tinkling in the front area of my WD. It seemed to be comming from the magnito area. With the engine off if i stuck a finger in under the mag coupling I could get a similar noise when i moved the mag half of the coupling. I took the mag off and cleaned the coupling, put a good spot of silicone gasket maker in the drive slots and put the mag back on. I haven't run it to see if this stops the noise yet. I did have a bit of slack in the coupling though.

Okay, so it looks like work time... in reply to Will Herring, 08-13-2006 17:49:05
I think I need to replace my fan belt and water pump (and probably get a new set of fan blades because that pulley is pretty worn out). So yeah, I"ll give it my last 15 minute hurrah and put it in the shed so I can get to work on it. Always something.

Try some BARSLEAK in the radiator. I have seen the oil in this product stop a W/P seal from leaking.

I've heard of similar products. Is it kind of like that purple stuff you put in your radiator?

wow that is awsum servic eout of a water pump. I usually replace them when the weep hole just shows moisture.

Will, I bet when you take that belt off the fan wobbles.

You are about to be a ripley's candidate for water pump service.

good luck

Oh yes... It indeed does wobble. Not much, but there's some play in it.

But it's the original waterpump and fan blade and pulley, so I guess it's done it's duty.

First thing I would do is pull the fan belt off and start the engine. If its still there then you may have a bearing going bad but you should also see an oil preassure fall off if so. Then if its gone grab the water pump and see if it has any play in the shaft and also do that to the alternator. Either one could have a bearing going bad

It sounded like a bearing to me... But does that mean it is unsafe to drive at this point, or I just need to be careful?

I assume it's my waterpump, myself. It's leaky anyway and needs replaced. I assume it's not my engine because it runs fine with no sputtering or stopping whatsoever.

Sorry to say this but if you know it leaks already you shouldn't run it in the first place. If it leaks you have no idea of how much or how little water you have in the system at any given time and can cause big problems like blown head gasket, cracked head, warped head. If you know it leaks repair/replace it before you fire it up again other wise your just looking for trouble and maybe even a blown engine. Sorry disregruard the first of my post since I missed a couple letter. DON'T RUN it till you fix that pump

Well technically it doesn't leak, it just drips out of that little hole in the center of the pump. Not much, but it's annoying. Maybe they all do this?

I think old is probably right. I had a main going on the D-14 and there was no tink, it was a loud clunk. I also found that the generator had so nearly an 1/16 of play which was adding to the racket but there could be no mistake about the crankshaft bearings, it was like it was going to come out the block.

You'll be able to tell with belt off by spinning or jiggling if the water pump is a problem. The kits are available and I did a couple of B water pump rebuilds and it wasn't that bad. I still wonder about the noise you describe though, the tink sounds like a shred of a fan belt that's starting to go. If you pull it like old suggests, you may find you have a really simple problem to fix. My belt driven chipper was making a tink today not long before the belt flew apart. I was tired of chipping anyway. ;-)

If it is the water pump, as long as it's pumping, you aren't going to hurt any thing else. That little impeller can't do much to the block. I'd worry about being able to tell that it is though. If it's got play, I'd fix it.

Chris

Oh wow... It looks like my belt is ready to fly apart on me. Perhaps it's not my waterpump.

By leak, I mean it drips. In 3 months, it's dripped out a total of an inch from the top.

Yep the problem with a drip is that it can become a flow before you know what happened and then your up a creek and have no paddle. Any time I know I have a water pump leaking it gets fixed ASAP no questions ask or I don't use the tractor but I do also have more tractors then I need so if one goes down its no big deal

Well it's been this way for 2 years now, and it only seems to drip while the tractor is running for some reason.

Like I said though, I think my fan belt is about ready to split apart. I took a look at it, and it's cracked on both the front and the back. Looks like a trip to the parts store tomorrow.

That little hole in the pump is the seal weep hole and hwne it starts leaking there it means the pump seal is going bad. I have never seen one last 2 years but if the belt isn't all that good that could be why. Your belt should be good and tight and if so you may find you will need a new pump soon because when you get a new belt you will be putting a lot more preassure on the pump.

I'll replace the belt and see where that gets me. Regardless, I really needed to replace the belt anyway.

Odd that a belt would make a tinking sound though, no?

Well if the belts bad it can sort of jump on the pulleys and slap them and make that sound and or with the pump being a little on the loose side it could also be adding to it

So when that pulley that goes on the front of the waterpump is loose, what causes that? Wear on the water pump, or the actual fan blade/pulley assembly itself?

Can be caused by the bolts holding the fan/pulley on being loose and or the bearings/seal going bad in the pump either one will cause that.

Well... I would assume that it is also the source of my noise then. Since it's a tinking sound.

Could well be. I've seen a pump shaft just loose enough that it would let the fan hit some place but yet till I pulled the fan off could see any place that it was hitting and that would cause a tink sort of noise. Had one that was driveing me crazy, when it ran it had this very low tink, tink tink noise and it took pulling it apart to find it. The fan was hitting on the iside of the sroud but you couldn't see it from the out side you had to be able to look inside where you can't get your head

I figure that's what mine is doing, but I can tell it isn't hitting the radiator or anything like that.

Hard to say. From you description I suspect the water pump. If it were me and All I wanted to do was run it a few minutes to put stuff away I probably would do it. Is it unsafe? Well unsafe is in the eye of the beholder. There is a chance that it could put a fan in the radiator. As I said I have chanced things like that and would probably do so in your situation.

Good point about the radiator in reply to Sid, 08-13-2006 20:19:17
If it's that bad, taking out the radiator is a lot more expensive that rebuild kit or even the outright replacement pump.
