does anyone have a template for a thermostat housing gasket? I don't know how far in it is supposed to extend. Is it supposed to cover the thermostat? It appears that if it doesn't the thermostat itself would fall back into the water outlet. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

I'm not familiar with every thermostat made, but it can't regulate water temp rattling around loose inside the housing, it has to physically block most of the water flow until it warms and opens up. It sounds like you have some suppliers effort to make a universal thermostat (a thermostat with different brackets to make it fit many different models) but even so, the thermostat would have to fit tightly into the bracket (the bottomless bowl thing) and be held rigidly in place. (Never seen one like that myself, but there's lots of things I haven't seen, too) Sounds like another trip to NAPA to see how it works, or if there's a missing part, or (probably better) maybe another store to get one that actually fits. Take your old one along in case you need to match it. And let us know how all this turns out; I'm dying of curiousity.

I must have tried to put it together every way but the right way. I brought the housing and both thermostats into NAPA and the guy there figured it out after a while. It goes from the top of the water outlet: rubber washer, thermostat, and then the support (turned upside down). It works.

Many thxx for letting us know how it came out. Most of the time we make our best guesses but never learn how close or how far off we were. Glad its together.

I think if you clean the area thoroughly, you'll find a recess that the thermostat fits into. You can make a gasket out of gasket material- nothing more than thick paper. Use a ball pein hammer to make the holes- striking it with another hammer will give you a good outline.

I realize that there is a recess, and the old thermostat fit into that and the other half of the housing. I did, however, buy a new thermostat from NAPA and they told me it was the right one. It came with three pieces. The actual thermostat looked basically like the old one, but smaller. It did not fit in the bottom half of the housing (it fell through (not big enough to stay on the edge of the outlet)). It also came with some sort of brass support, which looks like a bowl with a missing bottom. It does appear to be the correct outside diameter for fitting between the two halves of the thermostat housing. There was also some sort of a rubber washer included. I cannot figure out how to piece these together. The thermostat support (I guess I will call it that (the thing that looked like the bowl with no bottom)) appears only to fit one way, but when I put the thermostat in, I see no way to keep it from succumbing to the forces of gravity and falling into the lower half of the thermostat housing which is too wide to catch the thermostat. Should the gasket overlap to catch the thermostat so it stays in place in the upper half of the thermostat housing? Any ideas on where the rubber washer goes, or was it just extra for another model maybe?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
