I have a d-15 diesel and I cannot get it to start. I rebuilt the engine and put a new head on it,during the time it took to get the head the cylinder walls got some surface rust on them I cleaned them as much as I could without removing the pistons and rods. I am wondering if the rings might have been damaged enough with that little bit of rust to cause low compression.

A diesel won't start with air in the lines or system, have you bleed everything, I'd start there first.

What about the inj. pump?Did you have it off?Have you checked for fuel to the transfer punp ?(back of the pump where the fuel goes? Have you checked to see if fuel is dripping at the injector lines with the line off or cracked loose? Did you try some starting fluid in your air intake?

I had it rebuilt. And I am getting fuel to the injectors. And I tryed starting fluid, that is what has me confused. It will only puff grayish smoke out the exhaust. To me that is a sign of low compression.

I wouldn't worry much about the smoke - my rebuilt in my HD3 does the same.

If the timing is right, it will start. Mine, before rebuilding, used 2 quarts of oil every hour. The best cylinder of them had .011" egg-shape to it, and right at .014" taper - the rest were worse - and it would start fine. After rebuilding, I couldn't get it to start when timed correctly. After retarding it as far as the adjustment would allow, it would start, but wouldn't run well. A pump rebuild fixed it right up. I set the timing according to the book, and as soon as I got fuel at the 3rd injector, it fired. When I got it to #4, it ran.

I think you should double-check your timing. If it is right, and you are getting fuel at the injectors, it could very well be the pump.

Hope this helps, Dale(MO)

I would check the timing before I did anything else.Good luck
