Allis WD cooling system question

I have a wd with a single outlet to the radiator on the engine head. People have told me that it has a thermostat, but I can't figure something out. If the thermostat is set to open at 180 degrees, then where does the water go when the thermostat is not open? I don't see a bypass anywhere. If the engine was running and the water was not 180 degrees, wouldn't the water pump keep pumping because it is connected to the crankshaft via the belt? What would happen without a thermostat? can anyone explain this to me?

WD and WD 45 didnt have bypass D series do. I think the newer engins got hot spots if water didnt flow some,so the bypass just let it circle in the engine.Thenwhen the thermostat opened up the rad. water was added to cool engine. Most of the old cars I work on dont have bypasses, just a small hole in thermostat so some water can pass allowing hot water to get to sensor. Water pumps are centrifical force pumps. If water cant move easily the pump just spins. when water can move the speed of the pump throws the water out.

I agree with Old. My D-17 diesel has a bypass. Not sure about the gas or the WD series - don't think they do. This water pump is not positive displacement so it can run forever without any flow. It will create a positive pressure to keep water against all surfaces. When the thermostat opens, water will flow.

Can't say on that one for sure but on a lot of thermosats theres a by pass hole right nixt to the thermostat that you can't see with out removeing the houseing. Its just big enough to let some water flow but not enough to keep the engine as cool as it needs to be thats why the thermostat is there also to open up when it gets to the corrct heat.
