I bought a 1950 wd.I am in the process of changing it to 12 volt.I got a 3 wire gm alternator from the junk yard.I have the number 2 wire connected to the terminal marked battery on the alternator and the wire marked number 1 going back to the amp meter side of ignition switch with a diode in it.I did put a ballast resistor on and am using the 6 volt coil.I have not switched the wires on the amp gauge so i am aware that it will read plus on discharge and minus on charge.bottom line to all this is,it don't work. The gauge reads plus.I know the alternator or gauge could be bad or maybe I am missing something. Also I was wondering about changing the trans and final drive fluid on this thing.i have looked at the bottom of the pans on the final drives and see no drain plugs so I assume that they need to be removed then refilled using the plugs that are there. There are drain plugs all over underneath but up top all I see is one for the hyd. and two more for trans.clutch, rearend? What do I put in these?Thank you.

IF you maintained the positive ground at the battery, the ammeter will still read correctly.
If you do change the batter to negative ground, you will need to reverse the coil also.

Ya and if he has an alterntor on it like he says he does the moment he hooks it up + ground he will be buying a new alternator because it will fry the alterntor fast then he can unhook the battery. BTDT and its not good to have an alternator start smokeing, because if can cause other things to also smoke includeing the whole tractor

First things first. I would purchase a manual on this tractor right from this site. Second, there are a couple links from this site that will explain in great detail the charging system on the WD including wiring. It could get a little lengthy explaining via this forum everything you need to do.

Well lets see if I can explain how you should hook up your alternator. The alterntor has 3 wires. The #2 on the plug hooks to the big post on the alterntor. The wire from that big post goes either to the battery or the amp gauge. But there also has to be a wire from the battery going to that post on the gauge. Then on the other side of the gauge you run a wire to your ignition switch. Then with a diode in the wire from the #1 on the alternator the wire goes to the switch. The side of the switch that is hot when the switch is on. That side of the switch also goes to the ballast resistor and then to the coil. Hope that makes since to you. A good manual for you to get would be the I-T AC-11 manual which covers the WD
