I've agreed to purchase an Allis Chalmers CA, can anyone give me basic info on this tractor? It's a 4 cyl / gas/ wide front...I'm wondering what years they were produced, the good & the bad & what to watch out for. Also, what kind horse power...about equal to a FarmAll A? Thanks from Maine!~

I spent most of my time from age 11 - 17 on the seat of a '58 CA doing everything from plowing and cutivating to spreading manure. It was a great tractor, and I wish I had it now, but my much older brother got it when my Dad let it go. Glad it stayed in the family. That was 40 odd years ago, but it was easy to use, easy to maintain, and did all I asked of it and more. I recall plowing in the dark in the spring when we had to get the fields ready to plan, with the engine snorting and the top of the muffler pipe glowing red. Good days and nights to be on the farm.

I have a 1955 ca don't let its size fool you. I put it in pulls and ill put in the 5000 pound class. It has more than enought power to keep up with the larger tractors. As far as I know it is a stock motor. The only problem is it needs wider tires. The hand clutch in mine was slipping but I did some calling and got it fixed.

it ain't bigger than a farmall a,b, or c, but in the proper state of tune it'll whup the snot out of a super c. with an over bore kit, or d15 block, it'll run with (or over) an h or even the bigger olivers. but at that light of weight, it would be quite scary!

the other thing to check is the hand clutch (lever on the right) A lot of them slip if the tractor was used for heavy work. Some of them got bolted solid so they wouldn't slip rather than go to the expense of fixing them right. The lever has to be held forward to release the clutch. Internal springs keep it engaged when the lever is not pushed forward.

The CA was built from 1950 to 1958 when it was replaced with the D-12. It is bigger than the the Farmall A, B, C, and Super C. The Super C had about 23 hp on the belt pulley while the CA had 26.6 hp. the maximum pull was 3557 #. I had one a few years ago and sold it after I bought a D-14. I like the 14 better for shredding but wish I had kept the CA. I've got a C now as a replacement but it doesn't compare. The CA is a handy size and has lots of power. Steering should be very easy with your wide front.

The most common problem is not staying in gear in second or third. If the gears are good, you've got a winner.

I had one maybe 25 years ago.it was a '56 model. That was the stoutest little tractor I ever sat on. I have a Farmall Super A and that CA could pull it backwards...EASILY! No comparison...Nope....nada, nyet, hell no! I never a minutes worth of gear trouble but I did replace both clutches. I sorta miss the one I had.
