hi...i am new to allis chalmers tractors and just got a D14 yesterday. the problem im having with it is i need to turn off the tractor to shift into another gear or even stop (brakes are bad!!? if the tractor is running and and you attempt to put it in a different gear it just grinds. i adjusted the clutch and even accidentally unthreaded the rod (i got it back in), but it still grinds. the clutch should be engaging but it is not. the hand clutch works and the pto selector works (even while tractor is running). when i pull the hand clutch to nuetral the tractor still creeps. the clutch in it was said to be new. the pressure plate seems to have good pressure. is the throwout bearing bad? i got a good deal on the tractor, so this problem isnt worrying me too much. i just prefer to not split the tractor (unless necessary)

so i will be able to see all of this through the inspection hole? im gonna check it out in the morning again. i need to rool the engine over to see all the fingers right? i guess it wont be too much trouble to split it, if i have too. ive got a 9n that i refurbished and have never had any troubles with it. i just needed something larger to bale with. ive always loved allis"

You cannot shift gears if you use the hand clutch to do it. It sounds like it is the engine clutch that is causing you trouble - you mention a threaded rod which would be the clutch rod for the foot clutch. I've seen clutches that will not dis-engage - I've got one now (Ford 8N). It is possible that the throw out bearing failed and the clutch finger wore off so you can't disengage it. Occasionally, something sticky gets on the clutch disk and it drags or won't disengage.

The book says the engine, side rails and front end must be rolled forward to change the clutch. You can check the throwout bearing, the clutch fingers, and clearance between these items through an inspection hole in the bottom of the torque housing.

The D-14 (D-15, D-17) will creap when it is in the neutral position - this is why this clutch cannot be used for shifting.

The clutch problem may have been the reason you got such a good deal - I got a good deal on that Ford when I bought it and I still have the problem though I've learned how to live with it. I have the parts to fix it but no time to do it. I'd find the time if it was a D-14!
