The magneto has a firing order of 1,2,4,3. The distributor cap has an order of 1,2,3,4. Why is there a difference? My son put in new spark plug wires and accidently switched the middle two around and blew up the starter drive. Now we are unsure of which order to use without blowing up another starter drive. Can anyone help. Its a 1937 WC according to the serial numbers. We are restoring her for next years parades when she turns 70 years old.

Another question: Can any one tell me where the timing mark is for this 1937 Allis Chalmers WC? We want to make sure everything is right before we start it back up. Thanks to Texas Denny and JMS/MN for your replies. They helped out.

The third wire in the rotation goes to #4 plug, and the fourth wire goes to the #3 plug. That's how you get a firing order of 1,2,4,3.

Actually, both are 1,2,4,3. I makes no matter what the type of ignition is - the firing order is the same. Firing order is determined by the crank and the camshaft. I wouldn't expect the starter to fail because of mixing up plug wires. Probably your starter was ready to fail before the wire mix up.

Use 1243 and everything should work fine if the position of the distributor is correct.
