thanks to everyone who sent reply on where to find serial number on the wd/wd45 unit. I scrubbed all places and could not find any sign of numbers at all. However, if you walk up to the rear of the tractor on the left side of the engine block there is a plate stamped with the following WD262364GA. What I am trying to know is what is the year and make so I can begin to get parts.

I'm a little late to weigh in on this one but I will anyway. Knowing the production number and year is nice but I wouldn't buy ANY parts based on this info. Take whatever you wish apart and identify it to determine what part you need. A good example is the engine. Regardless of what serial number you have, the insides of the engine could be WD, WD-45 or any of several after market piston and sleeve sets that boost displacement and raise compression. This is true of the WC, WD, WD-45 and maybe some others. I've pulled a bunch of these apart but I never buy any parts until it is apart and I can determine what is inside.

WD262xxx motor would be a 1950 - best guess the tractor it came in would be between WD55000 and WD57000. Should be straight shift lever and GA makes original config would have been 5.5:1 compression - but as noted innerds may have been changed over years. Have you looked for s/n on top near left brake cover?

thankyou very much for your information: the stick is curved like the WD45 has, but I had another email that stated that the WD production line went for a short period of time using the curve stick before AC went to the WD45 model. I am still scrubbing in the left brake cover area, but no real luck yet, have had several comments to check that area even some vintage photos but this tractor seems to have had some pitting in that area.

Got this from a gun forum. I knew it could be done with acid. If they stamped it then the stressed steel under the letters and numbers can be read again.

"Polish the area where the serial number is with fine emery cloth, then rouge.

Wipe with a cut lemon.

Presto, serial number visible. "

I wonder if it is possible that replacement rear end housings, that were never assembled into tractors, were not stamped with serial numbers when they were sold as a replacement part only?

The serial # is the only way to tell for sure. I have a 1953 WD-45 that came factory stock with the WD block with a plate on the side, but has the 45 internals. The curved shifter will only tell you if you have a late WD or a WD-45.

no way to document, tractor acquired from dealer selling out his used tractors. I did get a reply stating that the engine serial number is a WD around the 1950 production. I was wondering some more about that shifter. Was there really a period of WD's having the curve shifter which mine has? Is there anything on a WD model that the 45 would not have, there is a big 6 digit raised cast number on the front of the stick base, could this be used?

The number you listed is the serial number of the engine. It is a WD engine as it starts with the letters "WD". A WD45 engine block starts with the numbers "45". No telling what crank or pistons are inside, could be built up to a WD45, many are. If it has a straight gear shift lever it is a WD. All straight shift levers were WD and all curved shift levers are WD45. The last year or so of WD production the transmission was changed to the one with the curved shifter. Someone may be able to cross reference block numbers to years and serial numbers, but mostly you have to find that serial number on the rear of the tractor to get to year and where it fits into the production run.

I ment to say that all WD45s have curved shift levers, not that all curved shifters were WD45.

Curved lever and constant-mesh transmission started with WD #127008, 1952. WD45 started at #146607, 1953.

Brad,
When you come up to your tractor from the rear, right behind your left brake access there is a vertical open space where a number is lightly stamped. Gotta look close, very hard to see. That's where the tractor sn is located. Not sure what the number on the block means. Good Luck.

Well things like points, plugs, condenser, cap, rotor are all the same for either one. Engine internal parts are differant if you have a WD instead of a WD45 but as I said if it has a plate that bolts on the right side of the engine its a WD and if it doesn't have the plate its a WD45 thats the simplest way to tell at least which engine it is. Now I just went out and looked at both my WD45 and my WD and here is where the numbers are. Lay your hand on the left hand brake cover, then under your hand will be a flat spot on the rear end, the number is stamped there. But as I have siad at least 3 times now look at the right side of the engine for that plate and you will know what the engine is at least

I listened to your advice on the plate, and had a reply on the engine tag on the left side. The engine tag states it is a WD of the 1950 production and I verify this even more by looking for the plate on the right side behind distrib. and it was clearly there, so we can now know that the engine is a WD. Now the stick is curved but more replies tell me that the curve stick was run on the WD late production. I have scrubbed the entire area around the brake plate cover, rear end, and all that area where instructed down to metal and there are no numbers unless the pitting has eaten them, also someone has suggested that it could be a replaced area of the tractor and the stamp may not be on the replacement part. The tractor needs a carb and there is nothing to start with on replacement, looking at the manuals it shows a TSX model used, should I go with that on rebuild from this tractor parts site? thanks for all the help, I am sure more questions will come

To find the tractor serial number, look on the vertical face, left side of the differential, below the brake access cover. Between that and the hole with a spring hooked into it. Some early WD tractors also had it stamped next to the brake cover. Notice I said 'stamped'. Serial numbers are not 'cast' into a tractor part, because the foundry does not know which tractor that part will be installed on. Serial numbers are in order of production in final assembly. Many WD tractors used a Zenith carb- much smaller than the Marvel-Schebler used on the WD45.

The TSX-159 or TSX-422 either one will owrk for you since its a WD engine. And yes that part of the rear end could have been replaced. If it has a number its on the flat place on that part but yes some times they are gone or not even there.. Also on the carb there should be a tag telling you what carb it is since there is a number of carbs it could have on it. The tag is in a place that you can't see unless you remove the carb, there should be a brass tag on the back side of it. Clean it off very carefully for the number that the carb is
