Where should we be looking and for what, by that I mean a plate riveted to the tractor or numbers stamped into the cast of a part. Let's say the say we can never find serial number what cast numbers could we reference such as the engine, etc. would like to start project but need to know what it is.

Use paint remover when searching, they are stamped very lightly just below the left brake cover (if standing at the back of the tractor). Paint alone will cover them up.

thanks for the information and especially the picture website. I have scrubed all the areas told to down to cast/metal and can find no markings of any kind. I have found this though. Walking up to the rear of the tractor on the left side of the motor on the lower block part behind the carb area there is a plate with these markings WD262364GA can you use this to identify

Serial numbers on a WC, WD, and WD45 are cast in to the rear end left hand side and to the back. So if you walk up behind the tractor they will be on the left of the rear end. They can be hard to see/read because of years or grease/dirt. Also if you look at the engine if it has a bolt on plate on the right hand side its a WD engine. If there is no plate on the engines right hand side its a WD45 engine
