Weak hydraulics on WD45

I have a question concerning my 1957 WD45 that I purchased back in March. This is my first "real" tractor so please bear with some possible dumb questions.
It has an aftermarket 3pt hitch and the previous owner said that he had used it to move round bales. One of the main reasons I bought the tractor was so that I could use a bale spear to occasionally move a round bale on our small acreage. What happens is that it seems to almost get the bale off the ground but will never quite make it. It raises the spear about 6 to 8 inches and then gives up. I can use it to mow with a 5ft bush hog and it will lift it off the ground ok, do I'm not sure what the problem is. I also have an AC trip loader on the front, and when we butchered a couple of steers this spring I was unable to get a 1200 lb animal completely off the ground using a chain on the loader. It would raise it up until the bucket was about hood-high, then simply stop. It always happened at the same height, too. I checked the hydraulic fluid level (the guy told me to use 30wt motor oil in the hydraulic system) and topped it off as needed but it still wouldn't do the job.
One thing I did try as an experiment was to hook the manure tines under the back bumper on my old Ford Ranger and it would lift it right off the ground. I then backed up to the Ranger, hooked the spear under the bumper and it didn't even seem close to getting it off the ground. Can anyone give me some ideas? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I really need to haul a bale from time to time.
Thanks in advance.

To opreate the splitter you would need a return line to the tractor's sump, I've seen one added to the drain hole.It might also need an extra reservoir for more fluid and it wiil be very slow.

main reason is the further back from tractor [bale spear] the less it will pick up...if the hydraulics have any wear the problem will be amplified or it could be possible your spear is a different design than previous owner had.

I called Farm & Fleet and they have a pressure gauge for $13 and an adapter to fit my spare Pioneer male hydraulic fitting for $1.19. I'll check to see what my pressure is and go from there. My bale spear doesn't appear to be much different than his was, except older and better made. The spear itself isn't set back much at all from the 3pt pins, so apparently the weight would be distributed pretty much the same.

Try connecting a gauge to check the pressure. Should be 3500 psi. 3300-3700 psi is ok range. can add shims to the valve to get the upper range of pressure .

Well, I picked up the gauge from Farm & Fleet after work today, installed the proper fittings and connected it to my rear outlet. When I raise my 3pt and it reaches the top and stops, the pressure gauge spikes to about 2500 psi. It then slowly but steadily drops to less than 2000 psi within 30 seconds to a minute. Does this mean I have a weak hydraulic pump or what?

I"ll have to pick up a gauge from Tractor Supply or Farm & Fleet and check it. I do appreciate your reply and hopefully I"ll find out soon what the issue is and post a reply to let you know.

One other question. I know that the WD45 hydraulic system is a low-volume one, but does anyone know the GPM rating? A friend is giving me a log splitter that has been converted for use with tractor hydraulics and I was wondering if this should work well for me.

My Dad's remedy for low pressure WD hydraulics in the day, was a Char-Lynn High Pressure pump that ran on off the PTO. It would lift about anything you want. The OEM cylinders need to be changed out to accomodate the difference.

Your only other conclusion is to lift less lbs. or upgrade to high volume.

From reading other people posts in this forum, it appears that I should be able to lift a bale, but my pressure isn't up to the normal level. However, if I were to get a CharLynn pump, how available are they and how expensive?
