Well, we got the generator working on our WD 45 by grounding the field terminal as was mentioned on this forum. However, I believe the we are now charging too much. With the tractor idling just after it gets running - the ammeter is at about 15 amps, pick the throttle up a bit and it sits around 30 amps. If you open it up to maximum throttle - the ammeter is past the gauged area, and near the plus sign. Once it runs for a while it seems to drop, but still will go out of the range of the gauge at 2/3 throttle or so.

Could it be possible we are bypassing the regulator? I do not think this is right, because the gauge sits smoothly, and when we unhook the ground wire from the regulator, the ammeter tends to jump around a little bit more.

This is our current set up - using a 12 v generator and a 12 v 4 post regulator. Field terminal of genny hooked to FLD of the VR and grounded. Armature terminal of genny hooked to ARM of vr. BAT terminal of the VR to the load side of the ammeter (the same side as the lights and coil run off of). The voltage regulator (the bracket) is gorunded well.

Any ideas guys? Is this high of a charge rate normal?

When you ground the field terminal you are by-passing the regulator. The stock generator system Allis used did not have a regulator. They used a generator with a third brush which is set to limit the output of the generator, a cut-out relay to keep the battery from back feeding the generator when the tractor is not running an the light switch had a resistor that was in the feild circuit to limit the charge rate when the light were not used. This switch has three positions: low charge, high charge, high charge with the lights on. This is the way it was set-up from the factory. If it was mine I would convert to 12 volt negative ground, put a Delco internally regulated alternator on it. This is what I have done to all the family's C-II Gleaners and what I did to the Father-in-Laws MT John Deere.

Well our system is currently negative ground, and we were trying to avoid the alternator because of costs. However, do you think we could recover a decent amount of the cost of an alternator by selling the generator? Another thought I was having - on a generator which terminal (field or armature) would be positive, or would it change based on which terminal was polarized with the positive jumper? If it changes - our generator was polarized with the positive jumper to the armature.

Also, if grounding the field terminal is bypassing the regulator, would this mean we have a bad regualtor? We do have a new regulator, and I know it has to be set up with your ground. However the only marking we find on the new one says POS-NEG on the back next to the product number. (it was a freebie).

All the alternators I have added to the Allis equipment mention were bought at a salvage yard. I do open them up and check things out in them. The yard around here get about five buck for an internal regulated Delco. The last internal regulated delco I bought was an 85 amp model taht I bought at a flea market for 50 cent. I opened it, found nothing wrong, spun it up on my homemade test jig where it produced current. It is waiting to go on my 67 Dodge, yes I said Dodge, 400 truck. Since I am using a mix of Dodge and GM electronics in the ignition system I do not think the Delco alternator will add any problems replacing the little 37 amp Chrysler alternator and you can not argue with the price.

If you need to go to an alternator at a reasonable price,, you can get one like this for $5 to $25 at an auto recycling yard.

It's a Delco 10SI. A typical original application is mid '70's to mid 80's Chevy pickups.

Use the diode shown, or an "idiot light" with a #194 lamp bulb in place of the diode to prevent current from backfeeding from the alternator's #1 "switched excite" terminal into the ignition system, and causing the engine to keep running when the ignition switch is shut off.

You will need to use a 6-12-Volt converting resistor ahead the the ignition coil, or replace it with a true 12-Volt coil.

the pos- neg feed to a generator is accomplished by flashing the genny. this sets it to which ever ground you are using. genny can go either way.
change the regulator, as it appears that it isn't working. when you changer to 12 volts and the regulator, did you install a new light switch. you can't use the old one with the resistor on a regulator. Bob

Didnt change the light switch - but all I have it doin is controlling the lights. Would simply having it in the circuit cause a problem?
