Hi all,
Just got an electric start 1951 b that up until the time i washed it off, would start excellent. In an attempt to clean off most of the grease, i power washed it all over. I did not hit the magnito area with the hose but I am sure it got the spash effect. Now it won't start. I have tried it for two days now. I took the spark plugs out and cleaned them, cleaned the moisture off the plug wires and so forth. I tried to crank it with the spark plug out against the block and there was no spark. which led me to believe it was in the maginito. So I took the cap off the maginito and cleaned the points. About 10 drops of water came out of the magnito housing so I opened up the maginto and there was more water/moisture in there. I cleaned it out the best i could without getting into the main part of the magnito because I don't have a manuel for it. I put it back together and still no spark or start.
What should I try now? Any suggestions? And now I know that what is said is true about power washers and electrics so you don't even have to bother. ha
Thanks
joel

Mag cap has absorbed water. The caps get porous with age. Dry the mag out to get your tractor running. After you are up and running, you can seal the mag cap with clear acrylic paint. The mag caps I have used this on will suck it up like a sponge. After the cap dries it will be black and shiny like a new one. After the cap is sealed in this way I paint the cap and mag what ever color the engine is to protect the cap. You may not think this will work but I did this on the mag on my portable welder and have not had a problem with a wet mag yet.

Got home this afternoon after a very hot day. Cranked on the 3rd try. Runs as good as ever again. Thanks everyone for the help. I did end up using the wd40 and took the disb cap off to let it dry off. joel

Park it in the sun with the cap off & let dry out good, or use a hair dryer. Make sure the points are firing before you put it back together. If it started fine before, I think it just got wet.

They make a good eletic cleaner that works well for your type of problem. Most auto parts stores have it. Also if you need the manaul I have it on the computer and I'd be happy to send it to you just drop me an e-mail

I'm wondering how much water you pressurized into other places as well, like under/through the shifter boot into the transmission. ??? You probably got the rear PTO shaft seal point blank too? I'm thinking/betting that you're going to be draining the transmission too.

If you got moisture out of the cap, and have no spark, the mag's a good place to look. Take a hair dryer and go after the mag. Make sure to do the cap as well. Make sure to clean the cap terminals. Do you remember those old ink pen/type writer erasers that used to look like pencils? If you can find one (hard to find) they work well inside of the cap terminals because they can reach down inside of them, and are a minor abrasive (polisher). Wires might be trash now. Wiring including grounding and ignition/kill switch. Search archives here...type in "Timing Allis Chalmers B", or something similar and you'll find some pretty good documentation and photos with regards to retiming it once you pull the rotor...oops, you already did.

Don't turn a power washer onto your B again. She sure don't care much for that. I know that you meant well...but that sure was unkind. Now that your grease zerks are clean, the hard way, ... grab a grease gun. Good luck.

pull the cap off the mag and hose it down inside and out with wd40...inside of mag too...should start then unless points rusted over.

Sorry BC I can't agree on that one, WD-40 can/will burn or explode if the points spark. Don't ask how I know that unless you want a long story. BTDT and will never do it again

i'm sure theres always a CHANCE of propellant igniting but i aint ever had a problem...generally speaking if you wait a minute for for fumes to dissapate theres nothing left to explode.
cant tell you how many flooded out vehicles i've dried out after floods in galveston.

Old, years ago when was looking for an old power wagon or K series 4x4 to pickup and rebuild, I happened across an article in a magazine that said "...after finding that old CJ (or whatever) that's been parked behind that barn for decades, have a can of WD-40 for two reasons. One, are always rusty bolts that need to be pentrated..., and two, makes good starting fluid without having to carry a can of starting fluid as well". Hmm???? So, I tried it. Yep, makes great starting fluid in at least a gasoline engine. I'm sure not as potent as ether, but sure is pretty flammable and explosive. Pretty good starting fluid in at least a gasoline engine. I've never tried diesel. So, if you say that you blew something up with it, I believe you. Ha Ha Ha Ha.

Yep 1971 GMC 1/2 ton truck that liked to eat distubtor caps. I sprayed the cap inside and out and then hit the starter and there was a big bang and I was likely the hood was down because the hood sort of jumped and all. Truck didn't start. Opened up the hood and distubutor cap plug wires rotor and all was all over the place what a mess. From then on no more WD-40 in/on distubutor caps. And yes its a great starter fluid and lubes at the same time as starting. Just think what could/would have happened if some one had been looking at the cap when I hit the starter.
