new B brakes too tight

Any suggestions for how I wear in or further adjust the new brakes on my model B. They are too tight now to use the locking eccentric that engages with the foot pedal. I have the adjustment bolt loosened as far as I dare go without it coming out of the nut threads. I've fashioned a steel wedge plate which I can shove under the eccentric when I depress the brake pedal.

I have the same problem with my new bands...they stop great but you can't set the parking brake. I've tried to wear them in alittle and even stretch them, but, no good. I was gonna try and fashion a custom bolt from grade 8 steel that's 1/4" longer than the stock one, but hadn't gotten around to it yet. I wonder if someone's making bands too short?

Your idea caused me to think of another one. I bought an automotive grade bolt longer than the adjusting bolt, but with same length & size of thread. I then had a local welder/blacksmith cut the top half off the Model B adjusting bolt and weld it to the thread half of the new bolt, making the entire bolt only 1/4" longer than the original adjusting bolt. It worked, and I can now lock the brakes with the eccentric. When I saw it worked well on one side, I bought another bolt and had the same thing done to the adjusting bolt on the other side.

I tried welding an extra 1/4 inch onto my brake adjustment bolts and found them to still be too short. I did an inch the second time around and they now work great. I got new bolts with my brake bands and they are the same length as the old ones. Unfortuantely, I didn't check the length of the brake bands before I threw away the old ones. My bet is the bands are shorter than the originals.

For a simple brake system, changing the brakes on my B was a real pain. Getting all the junk out of the housing was a nightmare. Oh well, all done now.
