hi my b is missing real bad at high rpm or under load even just driving around the only time it runs smooth is when the thing is sitting there idleing then it sounds real good but the second you throttle it up it misses and also if you pull the throttle back quickly it throws neat litlle flames out of the exhaust and pops real loud almost like a backfire. i was thinking maybe this was the timeing off but im not sure do you have any other suggestions. tim

Thanks for the reminder. Was working out of town for 3 weeks, got home this past weekend and used the B for mowing, and it was struggling under load, and missing too. But, I'm pretty sure that its because my sister called me on my cell and said was out mowing with it a couple weeks ago and stalled it out by the woods, then couldn't get it started, so she left it out there a few days until my brother came over and started it and got it back into the barn. She said she covered it because of some good storms, and I hope she did. So, this next weekend when I'm home again, I'll take the cap off of the mag, pull the rotor, make sure no moisture in wires...things like that. Clean it all out. Been there before, and when she gets tuned up, runs real nice...until this past weekend. We'll get ol' Ms. Reliable running reliably again. I always wipe her down and give her a well earned pat after a job well done. Sure wish my sister would treat her with more respect and care.

Mark

I'm having same issue with mine...I pulled the head off and had it planed, new exhaust valves put in, and all new guides...still runs the same. I've had the carb apart twice and can't see anything obvious...am leaning towards a new carb...but don't know for sure.

To me, this is a symptom of weak spark. Bad plugs, points, condensor, coil, or cap.

Compression on a CE engine is 115 lbs., on a BE engine is 94 lbs. So, you have enough to run good. When an engine runs better at high temperature, the heat is assisting combustion. While the tractor is running, pull off a plug wire and make the spark jump to the block. It should be a blue spark that will jump about 3/4 inch. If spark is yellow and weak, the mag needs work. The coil may be weak or the armature needs recharged. If the spark is strong, try a different brand of plugs. A very popular brand has been performing quite poorly in recent years. Plugs should be gapped .030" to .040" for a gasoline tractor.

It might be running to rich. Problem is unless you have a carb with an ajustable main jet you might have to replace the jet in the carb to fix it. It could also be distubutor problems and the advance isn't work as it should be. I'd pull the intake tube off the air clearer or the cup off the bottom and see if that helps you might have a clogged air cleaner also. Just a few things that it might be

ok i have alreay replaced the points and condenser in the mag (that was a learning experiance!) and plugs wires all that stuff are good or new. my carb does have an adjustable jet on it im guessing that the the one on the neck of the carb near the intake. i have played with that some and it runs a little smoother now. but still a horrible miss to it. what should the comprtession be for it they are anywhere from 100lbs to 110lbs seems a little low but they are fairly even. i have been cultivatinmg my sweet corn a little this morning and it seems to run smoother when it gets warmed up real good dad said maybe it needs piston rings. thanks for the help tim

100 PSI is preety good for compression on a B. Did you by chance when you replaced the plug wires use auto type plug wires instead of the copper wire type plug wires?? If you used the type of plug wires made for a car/truck that could be where your problem is. You need plug wires that have true copper wire not the supresiion type made for cars as it will take spark away from the plugs and cause all sorts of problems. With a mag what happens is you loose spark to the plug wires. As far as the carb if you have the adjustable main jet the adjustment is low on the carb and will be a screw pointing to the front of the tractor, but I'll bet you don't since only one in 5 have that option. Yous probably has a sort of brass plug instead of the adjustment. The one you adjusted is the idle adjustment not the main jet.
