190 XT fuel system

I recently bought a 190 XT and have devoloped a problem with the fuel return from the pump and injectors.

The tractor will gradually stall out and immediately restart.Cracking open the timing window on the pump will keep it running as it dies out.
This indicates a blockage in the return fuel side of the system.

I disconnected the line at the tank on the left hand side near the sediment bowl and had fuel flowing from it while running.
I removed the fitting expecting to find a check valve.
It was a straight through adapter fitting.
I ran a small screwdriver up into the threaded outlet in the tank and it seemed to hit steel as if the bottom of the tank was a dummy chamber.

I am familiar with John Deere and Internationals but not very well with Allis.
I have an I&T manual but it doesn`t address the system.
Would appreciate any help in regards to understanding where the blockage might be.

On the AC's there is a check valve in the top of the pump that is where the blockage usually occurs, most likely what has happened is the governor carrier retainer has flaked apart like most do and there are small chunks floating in the pump, and when one happens to hit the orfice leaving the pump, it shuts down, sometimes they will run for a while with no problems, sometimes not. But i will pretty well bet that's where your blockage is at, not at the tank.

Maybe, but the rpms stay level, usually when that breaks up the things will race and slow or just gain rpms on their own.

When I had the line disconnected at the tank fitting I could stall the motor within seconds by holding the fuel flow back with my thumb.

I agree with strange brew. Just because the ring is flaking does not mean it's broke, allowing the engine to race or die. I had the same thing happen to my XT. It would run a spell and then slowly die, but the governor worked fine up until that time. Clean the orfice and you'll be good to go for a while, but inevitably, you'll have to go through the pump.

I took out the return elbow and while not finding any foreign material,it did seem to be restricted. The thing had been setting for over a year until last April, and has been running fine until last weekend

I cobbed up a straight fitting and ran it for a while and seems to have cured it.
Even though there was some fuel flowing it must have still been building housing pressure.

I plowed a small area for a garden with a set of 720 IH 5-18 plows and was impressed.
It pulled them witout effort in 4th gear at about 3/4 throttle.
It was not hard ground but still.

Need to change the turbo as the base is cracked,am putting an Air Research on it and will have to improvise on the plumbing a little.
