Model C - 3 point impliment weight?

I just got a working model C this spring. It's been converted to accept cat-1 impliments. I also got a set of 3pt disk harrows from Cal Ranch to do the garden with. The disks are around 450 lbs and rated for 18 to 35 horse power tractors. I got the garden done but the front tires were off the ground most of the time. I returned the disks but now want to know what horse power rating or weight of impliments (disks, plow, sickle mower) should I be looking for?

Correction:The snap coupler is located ahead of the center of gravity and helps pull down on the front end. That is how it was designed to facilitate pulling. When you raise an implement it lifts and transfers the weight to the belly to the tune of 80% on the belly and 20% on the back end.

Thanks all! I might try weights in the future - I was a little nervous about weighing down the front end. Those front wheel spindals look pretty skinny. Anyone ever had front end damage that can be blamed on weights on the front?

The snap coupler lift pulls down on the tractor. That is why the front end doesn't come up.

Yes it does pull down on the tractor. It pulls down on the back end of the tractor, behind the rear wheels. That lightens the front end.

I agree the snap coupler pulls down on the tractor WHEN IN DRAFT..... .pulling something. it sure as hell doesn't pull the nose down when lifting something.

Well as John says depends on how the 3 point is set up, but either way the front of a C is light. You can fill your front tires with fluid which will help a lot and or you can add weights or both. Also looking things over and moveing the pivot point of the 3 point arms farward will help but you also have to be careful not to move them to far or things will get into the tires

There is no way to say for sure. It will depend a great deal on the 3 point conversion that you have. Some stick so far out the back that almost anything you pick up will lift your front wheels off the ground. Others are made closer to the tractor and will allow you to carry more. Of course the same things goes of the implement that you want to pick up. The farther back the center of gravity is on it, the less you can pick up.

I have a CA Allis bought it about a month ago, it came with a rear mount model 80R sickle bar mower. I haven't used it yet still going over the tractor and mower. The tractor doesn't have any weights on the front of it. The front end is very light...had to take the mower off the tractor to be able to drive the tractor onto the trailer (couldn't back on) The trailer is only about 2 feet high. You can buy some weights that bolt on each side of the engine (total 195lbs). I'm cheap so I'm building a tool box thingy onto the front of mine...doubles as a tool box and weight holder.

Strange.

I had a '56 CA for years and it was still snap coupler....but it had a seven foot pickup disk that I also used as a way to bring firewood to the basement door! I could pile a nice load on that disk and the front end never offered to come up. Yeah, mine had those slab weights on the engine....but even at that, the Allis disk was heavy and I'd put at least 500 pounds of firewood on it. I'll have to go through the photo box and see if I can find some pictures of Old Alice..as I called it...hehehehe!
