My 1950 WD starts and runs like a champ. Just recently, though, when I put it in gear and drive off, the engine revs very, very high and I can't get it to back down without turning off the tractor. She wants to go like a rocket - which might be fun if I were 16 and crazy - but on a 56 year old, narrow front, 3500 pound chunk of orange iron it's a bit unsettling. The carb is fine and appears to operating normally. Again, only when I put it in gear and attempt to drive it does this happen. At idle it's fine. I'm thinking govenor issues. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Thanks for the tips, fellas. I tinkered this weekend and I can't find springs anyplace - either front or near the carb (it has an aftermarket Zenith replacement carb). Also, I noticed on the right side (passenger side) on the linkage that there may be a spot for a spring there about center on the tractor up near where the wiring for the headlights is contained.

Does anyone have a picture of these springs? I looked in the shop manual and it doesn't hardly talk about the govenor.

Really appreciate the help!

I believe the gov linkage has a rod inside a tube across the front of engine may need to be freed up due to corrosion , lack of lube

Make sure both springs are there. The heavy one at the governor and light one that connects at the carb linkage. They both appear to pull back toward the front which should return the carb to it's current low setting. That's the first thing I'd look at. The governor lever should also be pretty free, if it's really stiff, it can't do it's job, maybe a bad bushing surface where it pivots?
