ACK! Stripped threading on #1 spark plug hole!

A tractor that I have been working on (not my own) I find has this problem (or so it's owner tells me). The threading on the #1 spark plug hole is stripped, and it doesn't want to come out. He is afraid that if we force it out, we'll be unable to put a new plug back in. Your guy's thoughts?

dont take this the wrong way but you obviously dont know much...check your local junior college out for a beginners course in small engine repair...i say small engines because they will teach you more basics than say an automotive class that will teach more electronics than mechanical stuff.
it will sure make your life easier when you tackle these fix ups.

Get it out and put in a HELLI coil which will fix the problem. BTDT more then once not the best way to fix but its also the only way with out replaceing the head of big $$ at a machine shop

I wouldn't risk doing further damage. Have someone put the Heli-Coil in who knows how. Even if it means going to a machine shop. It will save you in the long run.

What exactly is this "Helli Coil" you're talking about? Would it worked on any stripped bolt hole, or just in this particular case?

What OLD said. I used a heli-coil on stripped spark plug threads on a '64 Buick engine with aluminum heads. Never had another problem with the spark plug - changed it out no problem.

I have also used heli-coils on two stripped out water pump bolt threads on my '73 455 Buick. I think this repair was done almost 20 years ago.

If you are careful, take your time, and follow the instructions carefully, a heli-coil repair will hold up fine. GA Jim

A lot depends on what bolt hole your talking about. If its a head bolt probably not but they work well on a lot of other bolt holes and spark plug holes
