I just purchased a running "52 AC B. This tractor is intended for farm use, running a mower. I have ordered a service manual, but in the meantime, I"m trying to solve the problem of a jury-rigged 12 volt conversion. It has a 12 volt negative grounded battery and cables. However, it still has the 6 volt generator, which obviously isn"t capable of charging the 12 volt battery. After running it a few times, the battery is dead. The 3 position switch has been replaced with a 2 position switch, which has only one wire, and appears that it"s function is to ground the electrical system to shut the engine down. This is the only switch left on the gauge panel. There are two other holes for who knows what. My question is this: Should I restore it to a 6 volt battery with a 3 position switch, and if so, what is the best way to accomplish this? Thank you in advance for any help.

a magnito has an internal coil, and no center plug wire on the black bacalite cap. onlly 4 plug wires. the 12 volt battery is fine. look at the generator, ground the F to the frame. leave the A terminal bare. start tractor and measure the voltge out of the generator from the A to the F ( F must be grounded). If the generator is good, it will put out 12-13 volts as a 6 volt generator. It is possibly to connect a voltage regulator and charge the 12 volt battery. a better way is to install a new alternator, if you dont care about originality.

What you have isn't a 12 volt convertion but a case of some one putting a 12 volt battery on and not worrying about it being charged. Also sounds like it has a mag and not a distubutor but can only guess since you didn't explain that part of the system

Yes, it does still have the magneto. I think you are right, someone just threw a 12V battery on it and called it good. I'm keeping it hooked up to the charger for now. I guess I'll pick up a 6V battery and see if that will get me by til I can do a complete 12V conversion.
