I need to change the front crank seal on my B. The set screw holding the pulley on the shaft is froze. It takes a straight screw driver. Suggestions??
Also, I can't get the top pulley to slide to loosen up the belt. Suggestions?
It is a crank start, no generator or starter. Thanks

If you got as much as .030 clearance to knock it backwards to break it loose, it sure helps. If you do get it off, I'd drill and tap just in case you need to ever pull it again.

JMS forgot to tell you to be careful after you get that set screw loose as the pulley will not come off easy and if you use a gear puller on it you can/will brake the pulley, guess how I know. I just tried to pull one off a crankshaft and I broke it so now its just scrap iron

So...after the screw is loose, how do you get the pulley off, without using a puller? It's the normal way, to spread the load evenly. After I install a puller I give the bolt a few good hammer whacks- generally can turn the bolt a bit after that, and just continue. Sure, sometimes the part breaks, but most often it comes off ok. No guarantees in this business.

 A Little Tip From Dick L in reply to JMS/MN, 07-06-2006 22:32:48
If you take a piece of 1/4" flat stock steel the same size as the outside diameter of the pulley and slot it the width of the pulley hub diameter. You can insert it behind the pulley and the three jaw puller will hook onto the steel plate instead of the cast pulley and the pulley will not break. Takes a little time but costs less in the long run than another pulley. The replacement pulley will most likely be used and may not be as good as the one you jumped the gun on and broke.
Also the time saved by pulling directly on the pulley will be lost in finding, ordering and shipping time. You can make the plate with a saber saw and a metal cutting blade.

I bought two tractors using these engines that someone had taken the time to drill and tap the pulley hub so they could use a two bolt bar puller.

Since you are replacing the front seal, heating the screw with an oxy torch will not hurt anything. Put candlewax on as it cools. Also use the biggest screwdriver that will fit, and whack it with a hammer before you start turning. Top pulley- take it off the engine, take the two bolts out and carefully separate the two pieces- not easy if they are nicked. Clean them up with emery cloth, chuck them in a lathe if available and use a file or emery cloth. Use never-seize on assembly.
