Thanks for the replys from my earlier message. This is the mag I was talking about. F-M Model RV4. We got it wired right but can't keep it running. A friend suggested we sand the magnet to get the rust off. Is that the right way to go?

The FM RV and many other mags use E15 magneto thrust type bearings. Those have to be shimmed properly for a preload endplay of .001-.002". If the rotor is too loose it can rub and you will get erratic firing or no fire at all. The earlier cobalt magnets in the RV could need recharging and that is done on a magnet charger with blocks for the purpose. They did put Alnico magnet rotors in some later RV mags and those should keep their charge better but can use a recharge also if the rotor bearings are loose and let the magnet rub inside housing. That will cause it to loose charge. Old style coils and condensers are famous for being bad in those RV mags because of their age and insulation breakdown inside. Replacements or rewinds are available also with a few other new parts such as gaskets and seals and some impulse parts. Other parts would be available NOS only for the RV mags. If you need magnet recharged or testing email me.

Thanks for the help. We're going to try a little ether and see if it's still from moisture first. If not, I might be contacting you.

The magnets likely need recharged. When the coil heats up, it needs more amperage than the armature is supplying. If you should need a new rotor for it, I have several N.O.S. for it.

Jerry, What part numbers are on your NOS magnets? Early RV ones were old cobalt magnets while later ones were the updated Alnico magnets.
