Had my crankshaft ground to .010's today in hopes of getting a little oil pressure. I cannot seem to find where it tells in the manual which shims to start with. I do not want to start with to few or I will crush the bearings to much to start with. If I start with to many it will take me forever to get down to the proper measurement. Yes I am using the red plastigauge. I had an envelope in the cabinet with 3 different thicknesses of main shims. The IT manual simply states to install 2 shims on each side of the bearing. A little help could sure save me a lot of time. Thanks Darrel

Most of the time the oil pressure is lost at the cam bearings.

FYI I got the engine all togather today. It took one complete shim pack on each side of each bearing. (that is one .010" pack of 4 shims .0025" that are bonded togather)The mains and the rods ended up with a clearance of .00125". For those of you that give me grief for not measuring the shims on the way out... there were none left. For those of you that told me that WD 45's don't have shims... you don't know allis engines very well. For those that tell me not to use STP... the STP gets me 1000 hours on each crankshaft. Without it I cannot get 300 hours. If I do not get oil pressure now this engine will be for sale. I found a D17 series 4 engine this morning that will go in. DK

Hello fellows. I"m new on this tractor building stuff although I"ve built quite a few car engine, from modern to an old 1929 DeSota. I"m kinda of mixed up on the WD45. If you get the crankshaft turned say .010 both mains and rod journals why can"t you just get .010 over bearings like you would do for say a small block chevy? What"s this shim thing you all talk about and is there a way around that? What"s a good manual for rebuilding a WD45 engine. Thanks in advance. Joe

My Federal Mogul Book says to use a .008 shim pack. These are laminated so you can take a razor blade to separate and peal to adjust in .002 increments. Did you replace the cam bearings? They need to be perfect on this engine. Earl In Illinois

Well, I don't like "Plastigage", but it can be used, I guess..to check the Final clearances...

Since you didn't keep track of each individual stack, you are going to have to repeatedly adjust at least ONE, to find the total thickness to even Start out with... I adjust the clearances down (one at a time) until the bearing has no clearance, and then add the shims that give me the proper clearance...NO Guessing--like with plastigage.. Normal oil perssure on the early AC's is pretty low..maybe 10 lbs...and that can be lost by using the wrong oil filter.... Ron..
