Last month my dad and I got stuck in a hail/rain storm with his WC on a trailer. We tried pull-starting it with no luck, it would run as long as it was pulled and died when clutch was engaged. Dad opened up the mag and blew the water out and put it back together but now it back-fires. The mag is a Fairbanks-Morse with a top cap and dad took the front portion of the mag off so he wouldn't mess up the timing. If someone could tell me what the wiring configuration is (we tried about everything with no luck)and possibly if the timing may have been messed up by taking the front of the mag off, we'd surely appreciate it. Any advice on this mag is welcomed.

Either your timing or firing order is messed up. Not sure what you mean by side cap or top cap mag- The FM mag originally on the WD had wires coming out the rear end of it, in a horizontal fashion. #1 was usually top left or top right. If it converted to an AC distributor, the wires come out the top of the dist in a vertical fashion. Backfiring could be from having the plug wires on wrong- first thing to try. Start with any hole, plug them in 1-2-4-3. If it doesn't run, go around CW, using the next hole as #1. When you've done that 4 times, you're back to where you started. Then take the mag off, remount it with the coupler turned 180 degrees, and do the same plug wire procedure. You can also follow the timing procedure in the I&T service manual. To find TDC on #1, remove the plug and insert a long curved wire, let the piston push it up on compression stroke.

I looked at that earlier but it looks like its a side cap mag. Is timing the same for both a side cap and top cap?
