I bought a 6' belly mounted sickle mower for my Allis C last night, and it appears to be in nice condition. It came with the pulley that mounts on the PTO shaft, and previous owner said it ran nice. It has brackets for bolting to the bellhousing, and the rear bars of the frame bolt on top of the drawbar.

Does anyone have any info on what model this mower would be, and where I can find a manual for it? From what I've found on this site so far, I think it may be a #5 mower? Any info. on mounting and operation of the mower would be greatly appreciated, since I would like to try using it in the next week or two to cut my pasture hay. Do I mower the field clockwise (making right turns,) then finish the outside last by mowing in opposite direction? I have been using a MF36 self-propelled mower conditioner, but I've had a lot of trouble getting the clover to dry in the windrows. I've been thinking that swathing with a sickle and letting it dry flat may work better, then raking into windrows. Any suggestions or advice would be helpful.

Thank you for the replies. Looks like I have the "BC" mower with one belt. Thanks for emailing the manual, Old. I'm going to mount the mower on the C tonight. Mowing with the MF36 MOCO is always frustrating, so I'm hoping this goes better. I always seem to have trouble with hay building up on one of the drapers, then it will feed a big pile all at once into the conditioner. Then I end up with a 3' high spot in the windrow or jammed up rollers. The conditioner rollers on the MF36 are rubber, so I don't think they put much crimp in the hay anyway. Seems like I can let the windrows sit for several dry days, and when I flip it over the clover underneath is wet mush. The sickle mower will be slower, but more time on the tractor is better anyhow.

Getting clover to dry is always a challenge, but much more so behind a swather like your MF 36. Conditioner is much narrower than the cutting width, and can't crimp it much as it goes through the rolls. The sickle mower will work much better. I always started a field with a mower by making about 3 CW rounds, then taking the back swath along the outer edge. OK to leave it til later, but I liked doing that long outside round early on, rather than when the rest of the field was done. Seemed to take forever after being used to the short rounds close to the center. By cutting 3 CW it gives you plenty of room to turn to make the back swath. Some people make the outside cut first, going CCW, but I'd rather leave it til later- then when you hit 'surprises' in the fence row, you hae room to pull away. Just use whatever pattern works for you.

Hi Loren,

Does your mower have a drive pulley that uses two belts or one belt? If it uses a single belt, it is likely the B/C mower. I think the #5 mower was for the CA and uses two drive belts. You have the sequence correct for mowing. Go clockwise starting from the outside. When the field is done, make a last pass counterclockwise to get the outside edges that were left standing when you started. You want to keep the wheel tracks on the already-cut hay as much as possible. That is not possible on that very first outside pass however.

If you do have the B/C mower with single belt, email me with any specific questions. I use one on my '42B every summer and have for many years.

I was started mowing hay as a kid and was told by my dad to mow the whole field turnning right and them mow the outsid last. I am 68 and still mow that way and probly always will. Thinking about it though I cant for the life of me see that you would have a problem the other way. Dad started out with a team of horses mowing hay. I never mowed with a team so there might be a reason in there that I would not know about. Over hanging fence rows, fallen limbs????

Is it better to drive the tractor over the swathed hay vs. the standing grass? I suppose that making right turns (clockwise around field) would keep the tractor on the swath after the first time around.

My self I always start on the out side of a field and work my way in to the center but who knows I maybe doing it wrong and if I am I have been doing so for 20 plus years. Thats also how I remember them doing it when I was a kid working in the field picking up hay

When you start on the outside of the field, is the sickle bar on the outside of the field or the tractor?

Well the way I do it is the sickle is to the inside of the field you you just keep going around till theres no more field. So the tractor runs over what you have just cut and the sickle points to the center of the field
