Could be bad plugs, or plug wires. Also could be the cap or rotor or even the distubutor shaft/bushings. Could also be a problem with the valves not opening as they should. Broken or bent push rods, broken rocker arms or even the adjustment screws have backed out and not opening the valves.

thanks for the reply. plugs are new and thgere is spark on all the plugs.the rotor has quite abit of wear on it to the point that there is a little whole in it. I am trying to find a new one but not sure where to look.the push rods and rockers are all in good shape.i think ill try re-setting the adjustment screws I don"t know why but I think that might be part of the problem.
thanks again.

From what you say it sounds like your cap and rotor are probably bad. Is this a mag type systm or a distubuto type of system. If its a distributor system any good auto parts store should be able to get you the cap and rotor. I get tractor parts from Oriellys all the time.

found the parts today. put them on and started her up.runs better but as soon as I put it in gear the motor dies. it seems to me like it's not getting enough gas.any other suggestions would be appreciated. oh yeah before this problem started I was mowing hay with it and it was working just great. but then all of a sudden it would just run for about 20-30 min. and die. wait about twenty minutes and it was like it never happened. this was last week.

You may have a codenser going bad or you also could have some junk in the fuel system. Either one will also cause you some of the problems your now talking about
