A friend of mine recently bought a WD 45 . It appears that the transmission is stuck in gear. I'm not sure what gear, it will only drive foward with the hand clutch. The only other gear it will shift into is reverse, and when you pull the clutch it wants to kill the engine. What do I need to do with this?

Phil's diagnoses is correct and you may have to do what he recommends. I have also been able to fix this condition sometimes by just pulling the shifter stick and putting it back in with a shim. first check to see if the shift lever has a lot of vertical play. Then remove the boot and snap ring below that. Pull the stick and use a large screwdriver to move the shift forks into neutral. Neutral would be when all the slot in each of the forks lines up. (If you knew what gear it is in you could just aim for the slot in the fork so the shift lever would be in the right position.) If the shift lever has a lot of vertical play you can shim under the snap ring to hold the cup shaped washer under the snap ring down. Holding the shift lever down will help prevent it from coming out of the fork. If this works, it is easier than building up the end of the shift lever. If there wasn't much vertical play then you have to build up the end of the shift lever.

Sounds like the shift lever is not properly engaged in the shift forks. Pull the tower off of the trans and line all the forks up so the tans is in neutral and reinstall the tower. Should work now. If it happens again, you will need to build up and reshape the bottom end of the lever so it fits the forks more snugly.
