I just aquired an old WD, sat on the corner of a field. Claim was it ran a few years ago. Engine is loose, has some old gas in it. How are the plug wires routed to the 4 cylinders? The mag has numbers 1,2,3,4 on it. Do I take the wire connected to the #1 post on the mag and hook it on cylinder #1? They were not hooked up this way, but it would not start either, spraying gas in the carb. I guess the big question is how do I go about putting the plug wires back on if i took them all off at the same time. This is my first 4 cylinder tractor, the rest are 2 cylinders LOL, I will post a pic in the stuck and troubled section. Thanks for your help guys.

Mike, I check out the pic of your tractor in the stuck & troubled section. Looks like a fun project. I collect mostly IH tractors, but a WD followed me home last fall, in similar condition to yours, in that it hadn't ran for a few years. Someone had tried to work on the dstributor a few years ago, but they couldn't get it figured out. I took apart the distributor and cleaned and retimed it, and cleaned the carb and fuel tank. The fuel tank was really dirty so I had it professionally cleaned and sealed. Put it all back together and it runs great. Last month I put in new brake pads and brake drums, since one drum was cracked and both were worn with grooves from the pad rivets. Then new water pump and new oil pan gaskets to stop some of the leaks. Looking forward to baling hay with it in a few weeks.

Can you take the distributor cap off the mag to first check the rotation direction of the rotor when the motor is turned over? To find the #1 wire, pull the spark plugs out and put your finger over the #1 hole. Turn the motor over by hand until you feel air pressure, so you know you"re on the compression stroke for #1 (aproaching TDC for ignition.) With the flywheel cover removed, continue to turn over the motor while watching the flywheel, until the ignition mark on the flywheel is lined up with the index mark on the bellhousing. With the marks lined up, the mag should trip for ignition on #1. Look for which plug wire is lined up with the mag rotor; this will be #1 plug wire. Other wires will then be according to 1-2-4-3 firing order, in rotation direction. I would then hook up all wires to plugs but leave the plugs out on the block, and check for spark on each one at TDC of each cylinder, when turning motor over by hand. Check the point gap and timing of the points opening, especially if the mag or distributor was off the tractor. An I&T manual will detail the steps for timing the mag. For turning a WD engine over by hand, you can put a pipe wrench on the PTO shaft with the PTO engaged, and turn the motor over a little at a time. This works good for checking the flywheel marks if you"re by yourself, easier than using the front crank (especially if you don"t have the crank handle or the shaft through the bolster is siezed.) Safety note: disconnect battery before putting pipe wrench on PTO shaft, just in case you forget and hit the starter.

Before you start switching wires, make sure you have spark which could be your problem in the first place. At some point in time some one may have pulled the mag and gotten it on 180 out and thats why the plug wires are also on wrong as far as the markings on the mag. Believe me I have seen that more then once and it will mess with your head big time. Get spark first then see what happens.

The firing order is 1-2-4-3- that should be on the casting ahead of the mag. Try putting the #1` wire on the top left spot on the mag, and go clockwise around the mag for the others. If that does not work, put #1 on the top right on the mag, and follow the same clockwise pattern. Granted, it could be in any pattern, but those two are the most common.
