THANKS FOR THE HELP. MY DIESEL D17 IS CURRENTLY BEING REBUILT AND SINCE I BOUGHT IT WITH A BAD MOTOR I"VE NEVER USED IT OR ANY OTHER D17 BEFORE. I"M TRYING TO LEARN ALL I CAN. THIS IS A GREAT WEB SITE!!!

It is live, via the hand clutch, but not independent. Works just like the others described.

The D series has a live pto.

Was sort of the next step from the WD45 trans.

When the foot clutch is depressed pto stops. but the hand clutch/power director when in neutral will give you pto without forward movement.

its semi live using the hand clutch...foot clutch disengages it along with forward motion.

Before the terminology police come on here and start arguing about the terms "live" "independent" and "constant running" and confuse the dickens out of you I"ll try to answer your question. You must use the foot clutch to put the PTO in gear. Once in gear you use the foot clutch to start PTO motion. Then if you wish to stop the tractor movment while the PTO continues to run you use the hand clutch, if you wish the PTO to stop also you use the foot clutch.
