We recently inherited this tractor. We used it last year and it worked fine. This year, we changed the oil & filter and got it ready to use for bushhogging. After several hours and after it had cooled down, we checked the oil only to find it not registering on the dipstick. We added almost 2 quarts. It was used for several more hours and the same thing happened. Does anyone have any idea as to what could be the problem? We checked everywhere for leaks and found none. Any help would be appreciated!
Thank you, Cindy

The first thing that comes to mind is, did you buy diesel-rated motor oil? Most oils say 'for gasoline engines' (i.e. not adequate for diesel requirements). Shell Rotella 15-40 is one of the most popular for diesels. I like to stay with whatever the previous owner used if that is a good multi-grade diesel-rated oil. That engine has a reputation of being slow to get oil to moving parts when started. Starting at faster-than-idle speeds means more wear before oil gets where it needs to go. I wouldn't recommend anything but 15-40 for most climates. Other choices would either flow too slowly for start-up conditions or be too thin when hot.

what kind of oil are you using? its been my experience that if you switch from single weight oil to multi grade oil consumption will increase if the rings are marginal...try a name brand 40 weight.
