I was wondering what would be the best way to remove old brake shoe springs. Out of the four springs on my Wd one is broken and the other three look like they are about to break. I already have the new springs and have installed a new one in place of the broken one. The broken one was easy to remove as it was not under tension. I bent a piece of wire into a "U" shape and inserted it in through the hole where the spring hook catches and pulled the spring through. Replacing the spring was easy. I just can't seem to get out the other springs to replace.

Also, my shift lever is worn out and slips out of gear quite often. I have found a place that sells the lever for $109 but I was wondering if anybody knows where I could find a cheaper one or if somebody has detailed instruction on how to rebuild the levers. Thank You

Used a wire to hook the spring- another way is to use a cotter pin. After inserting in the hole and hooking the spring, bend the protruding ends and grip with a plier. (Or is it pair of pliers?) Shift levers can be built up with weld and ground off. A new one is good to have as a guide, but you might need to go bigger anyway because the forks are worn as well. The original is sort of like a trapezoidal cone.- square bottom, square top, tapered sides. Like the tapered concrete base for a basement post.

Remove the brake covers and relieve the tension on the front spring by backing off the nut on the clevis stud. Remove the tension on the rear spring by backing off the adjusting bolt on the outside rear of the brake housing. Replace the springs and readjust the brakes according to the manual.

I would like to ask for some help here too. I have tried to find this info out before but I guess I don't get it. When removing the brake pins underneath, there is a clip with a tiny screw. I can get my hand in there and feel the screw but I can't see it with a flashlight. The pins seem loose but if I could get the clip off and I slide the pin toward the wheel, where will it go? Looking in there it seems there isn't room to slide the pin out because it will hit the casting before it comes out. This is all suposed to happen without removing the wheel. right?
