I find this interesting. A poll, responses by mail, show approval by the military of Bush's job performance in Iraq and Afghanistan, has fallen to 54%, a drop of 11 points over the previous year. The average respondent was an older, career oriented soldier or officer. The implication is that in the trenches the numbers would be lower. Re-enlistment numbers were as follows for these years, 02-72.4% 03-75.1% 04-63.2% The numbers have rebounded nicely since then, but are shrouded in that the Department of Defense took over the release of the numbers as of 05. I do not read military magazines, is the Military Times a left wing liberal rag, or did someone step in to cook the books when the numbers dived in 04? The rebound may be honest, but the timing of the takeover looks fishy. As a side note, a fellow I work with came back from Iraq, is a vehement supporter of his fellow soldiers, as he should be, but would not re-up for any amount of bonus. Above a certain level of rank, there is little physical danger and he no longer trusts their judgements to be rational, but politically motivated instead. He does not believe these people will ever get along. He also noted that many in the military will support any action, right or wrong, because that's what they do. Play army for real, as a lifestyle.
