AC WD45 Diesel Swap

I have an AC model "WD" and was wondering if i could put in a WD45 diesel engine in place of the 4 cyl gas i have now or if any other ac diesel would fit in there. any info on this subject greatly appreciated. thanks

Yes you can, frames are the same but 45D set lower so you will have cut th top rail to accomade the oil filter and govnor, you will also need a disel adapter plate, flywheel, starter and rad. If it's a ticycle the webbing from the rear of the front will have be cut so the front pully will fit, if it's a wide front you will need the rear support for a WF from a D. Other than the above it's a piece of cake. Good Luck. H.B.

Since you started a list here is a few more things to add to that simple swap. 1. Modify fuel tank for return line or find diesel tank
2. Radiator inlet and outlets need to be moved, or find diesel tank. Also less core in gas radiator.
3. Need to add idle stop in quadrant or find one with stop.
4. Throttle lever needs to have stop added or find diesel lever.
5. Entire linkage from throttle to pump needs to be fabricated or find diesel tractor with linkage to remove.
6. The diesel starter is differant, and needed and expensive.
7. Diesel battery box is bigger and also needed, well I guess a board will work.
8. If you intend to monitor your motor you will need a place to mount oil pressure and temp gauges, Diesel gauge pod is nice.
9 Gas hood is too short, diesel hood will fit and have nice hole for pod suggested in #8 above.
10 Diesel air cleaner is differant as is piping 11 Charging system needs to be changed to 12V
12 Wiring will be enough differant youd be better served to start over

Probably more too. Fact is he needs most of a WD-45D to make a WD-D. To each his own, good luck what ever you do.

Didn't the WD45 diesel have a longer frame to accomodate the longer (6 cyl. diesel) engine?

No, frame is the same length but there are some differances in the diesel rails.

Butch has it right....there have been a number of conversions done from Diesel to Gas, just because a good engine is rare and expensive...
The 45D tractors also have different rear end and PTO gearing; that was because the rated engine RPM was higher in the Diesel version in order to get enough power out of it.

Yes the motor will bolt to the transmission assuming you get the adapter plate with it but that is a long ways from the end of the changes you need to make to the WD to make it fit AND run AND operate. I started to make a list, belive me there are a lot of changes to be made. Here is my advise. Sell the WD frame and fix whatever needs done to the WD45D doner tractor to make it a runner, you'll be money ahead now, and when you decide to sell it. If you have somehow lucked into a running WD45D motor for less than the family fortune purchase one of the many 45D motorless frames that are around and build a 45D out of it. You wil then have a nice AND valuable tractor instead of a cobbed up frankenstien of much less value.

It should fit because the WD and the WD-45 just have different crankshafts and pistons. It should just slide rightin because they have the same rear ends.and chassis.

The WD and WD45 GAS tractors are very much alike. But I believe the WD45 diesel is quite a bit different. The change can be made, but I believe you will need quite a few parts besides just the engine changed out.
